  • play music without cd?

I was wondering if there was anyway to have quake play music for the levels besides from the cd? Like from a file in the main directory. My cd drive seems to have an issue with burning cd's. I want to try playing with the remixed version of the original soundtrack. I don't want to use media player in the background either.

Anyway to do this? Any specific engine?

      DirectQ

Since it is DirectX (as opposed to OpenGL) it will only run on windows systems (including 7)

Make sure to install the prerequisites before you launch DirectQ tho (see the right side of the blog)

To play the .mp3's just make a "music" folder under your id1 folder and chuck em in there.. (I think they should be named "T01.mp3" and so on)

No naming restrictions, but they are played in strict ASCII (or whatever it is that NTFS uses behind the scenes) order, so as long as you have the sort order matching what you want, you can call them whatever you like.

so they can simply be named track 01, track 02, track 03, etc.? And I just put them in a folder labeled "music" under whatever folder I am playing like id1 or hipnotic?

Do I still have to have "fake" track one like if I was playing them off an actual cd?

How about you read the documentation of those engines?

                Yes, yes and no
What do you mean exactly? What do I have to do differently? Just don't have to make the fake track? Does the track numbering have to start at 02 or can they still start at 01?

How about you read the documentation of those engines?
I did try looking in any directQ documentation I could find, but couldn't find the answer. That's why I'm asking in the help forum.

Thanks for the help to everyone else.

                  Your questions in order, basically:

so they can simply be named track 01, track 02, track 03, etc.?
                  yes

And I just put them in a folder labeled "music" under whatever folder I am playing like id1 or hipnotic?
                  yes

Do I still have to have "fake" track one like if I was playing them off an actual cd?
                  no

ok. So I don't have to make a fake track 01 then. Can the tracks start at track 01? Or do they have to start at 02 like they do on the actual cd?

                        Here is a FitzQuake 0.85 I added MH's mp3 support into:

                        http://quakeone.com/proquake/src_oth...ake085_mp3.zip

Here is a Travail soundtrack in mp3 format that works as is with it:

                        http://www.quake-1.com/files/modfile...k_mp3_easy.zip

Quake's soundtrack is copyrighted, making it somewhat difficult to package it into either ogg or mp3 format because then you are violating copyright and doing something illegal.

I know the original soundtrack is copyrighted, but I do own it and both mission packs. I just want to be able to play with music without having to put the cd in every time.

I mean to publicly make them available for download at a site, like here.

What you do personally obviously is more than fine.

Just explaining why there isn't a link to some "download and go" ogg set for DarkPlaces at this site or others -- this is certainly not anywhere near the first time the question has been asked (you aren't the first ... maybe not even the 10th to ask the question here.)

But we certainly need a wiki with quick answers to these questions. Me personally ... my time is sacked and already allocated to other Quake projects ...

I completely understand and was already aware of that. I wasn't asking for the actual music files. Just if it was possible to play them that way and how.

I agree that a wiki entry for these types of questions would be great so guys like me don't have have these long winded posts with a bunch of how-to questions.
