Finally tried it out with directQ and it works. But it seems the tracks must be named specifically to work correctly. They must also start at track 02. At least that's the only way I could get it to work.

That's really odd. This (see attachment) is the way I have mine set up (cheesy made-up names and all) and it's always worked fine. Maybe I need to test a little more?

I just noticed that when I play, The game uses the intermission music instead of the main theme music when the game starts. Everything else seems to be in the correct order except the opening music.

first make a playlist, select random and run the tracks of any media player...then run the game

Thanks, but the issue has already been resolved. Besides, I specifically stated in the first post that I didn't want to run media player in the background.

Baker, could you please reupload the fitzquake with mp3/ogg support archive? I've been trying to get music to work.

Does anyone know how to run mp3 music in darkplaces? (or ogg music)

Nevermind, I miss read the darkplaces.txt file
                        it says:

These files must be in ogg or wav format, and numbers begin at 002 if you wish to replace (or install) the Quake cd music - since track 001 was the Quake data track.
                        quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track002.ogg
                        quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track003.ogg
                        etc...

This brings up an interesting question... since my original Quake CD is packed away in storage somewhere and I've just been moving my pak files around for years... weren't the original 1996 disc audio files in .cda?

.cda files are just shortcuts to the actual CD audio tracks. I used media player to rip the CD music into a .wma format and then I used Nero WaveEditor to convert them into .ogg files.

Thanks to all people who gave help to use soundtrack without cd, finally I can play with soundtrack. Never played Quake 1 with soundtrack (and I've played Quake for the first time when I was 9)
