  • A really annoying Dark Places error (SCRN INCLUDED)

I downloaded the 2.7 GB high res pack for Darkplaces yesterday (took about 6 hours) and dropped it in my ID1 folder. The game loads up but the menue doesn't work, items show up as rainbow coloured triangles and the monsters look really old still.

This error pops up (SCREEN SHOT BELOW) when I hit esc to get to the menu. Can someone tell me if I need to download something else or what I might be doing wrong here?

    Thanks ^^

It's okay, anyone else who has ever even bothered attempting DarkPlaces + Rygel Textures has found that its a bigger pain in the ass than it REALLY need be.
Here is some instructions I was given awhile back, hope they work for you....
****edited some things, instructions included links to original Pak files. woops****
I made a separate QUAKE DIR.

    d:\Quake

Copied my ID1 folder into it

Installed my DP into D:\Quake and NOT in its own folder, just dumped it straight into the quake folder.

I then downloaded Rygels Ultra Pack in 3 parts but WINRAR unpacks it in 1 shot which should be a 2.7GB PK3 file and just drop it into the ID1 folder.

I also downloaded the quake reforged and retexture packs and dropped those into the id1 folder.

Thanks it makes a bit more sense now. But do I seriously have to rename all the model .tga files with .mdl in there somewhere? I mean, its confusing WHERE exactly I'm supposed to add that in the file name.

Also, why does the screenshots of the texture pack by this guy look so fancy? Like the water looks really real in the screenshots but it looks old GL in Darkplaces. I guess what I mean is... is all this model tga renaming worth it?

Also, is there a simpler engine that could run this hi res pack? I'm thinking not but I figured it was worth a shot. I mean.. he SAYS in the instructions to drop it in ID1. He never mentioned downloading all this other stuff on his site >.<

Thats the most obvious problem to using DarkPlaces, it's as near to rocket-science as humanly possible.....setting up DP with anything is a pain in the butt.

There is a mod submenu in DP that might somehow have to be enabled, I don't play with DP at all,but I do have all the downloads required, but until someone creates a easier way of doing things, only the really dedicated to getting DPto work will actually, get it to work. For the rest of us , we have Qrack, which can run custom textures as well,im just pretty sure it wont run the rygel pack

          Hello Rebekah,

nice to see women playing ugly brutal games like Quake

I suggest deleting your complete Quake folder and reinstall everything.
You dont need to rename anything when using DP with Rygels pack.

Please follow these steps and see if it helps:
1.) Install Quake (and patch it to 1.06).
2.) Extract Darkplaces into your Quake folder, so that darkplaces.exe is directly in it. (not in any subfolder)
3.) If you have Rygels pack as a .pk3 file, drop it into your id1 folder.

          This is all you need.
Start Darkplaces.exe and it should run.
Make your options settings and play.

Odd thing is,I've followed simple sets of instructions like this, and in reality it never seems to be as easy as 1 2 3. I'm fairly seasoned in quake (I never really quit, hiatus maybe?) and it still evades me why setting up DP should be any harder than say,Qrack, but that hasn't been the case for many people.

I think the reason why many people have problems setting up DP is,
they want to have everything at once.

In reality setting up DP is as easy as any other engine. Its really 1,2,3 and you are done.

But new guys want to have, better water, high res textures, bloom here, shadows there, dpmod and all at once.
              This is why they fail...

DP is out of the box beautiful enough to make you happy.
People should first play DP without any gimmicks and see how beautiful it is.
This way, they will get to "know" DP and its million ways in customizing.

Then, if they really need more, they should make it step by step.

              That is my opinion.

I had a similar error, i downloaded the 2.7gb ultra pack, and another texture set thing from there, but the other texture set was for Trenabre so i didn't use it.

Might try using it sometime, as i could just throw it in id1/textures and see if it works.

As the only issue i noticed, was it made the torches in my quake, look like these stupid diamonds, and due to the fact i couldn't see the cool flaming torches anymore, i removed the ultra pack, and just ran DP for a client on linux... with default quake textures.

Truthfully nobody needs to reinstall quake, like ever, just remove everything except ID1 folder, and then start fresh... if you wanted too, with a new client, as none of the files that came with quake exceptions of your id1 files, are required for the newer clients.

btw: out of curiousity, as i know i dled the darkplacesmod20080808.zip (dp mod) file before, if you take these files in the DPmod folder and plop them in id1 and then run darkplaces and then type: cvar_resettodefaults_all in console.

Then it looks pretty good, i tested this with the high pack, not the utlra... and the flames are back for the torches. yay!

but... yeah, it is kind've confusing i guess.

                  Seven, you are right, but...
many people are younger than us and they like the great gameplay of quake, but hate the old graphics

                    7 and Ikubo,

I know you guys are really busy and im not even sure if you can do something like this...

I think the quake community would love to have a DP full install exe that comes with all the bells and whistles ready to go and detailed read me on where to extract to and how to turn the mods on once inside DP.

This game is 14 years old and people want to see these new, cool graphics that others can get working.

I know i have heard you guys say before, that people need to come to their own conclusion when combining light maps and rygels, etc, to make their own graphics they like. This is a great idea for people that want to go that far but i would say the majority of the quake community wants to double click, enter, enter, frag face.

So on behalf of the rest of the community, i would take the word of expert graphics guys like yourselves and use a combined auto installation that you made.

As a quake community i would think we would like to put our best foot forward so we can attract old and new players. DP as a client is a step in the right direction but the tedious and painful path of setting it up with all the bells and whistles pretty much turns off most people. So they install proquake and shrug.

Maybe you 2 arent the ones that will ever do this but i see you involved so much in helping others make DP work that i figured i would toss it at you 2 first.

In my Quake/id1/ folder the PK3s are subdivided like modules (HUD.pk3, MONSTERS.pk3, LIGHTS.pk3 and so on...) i cant write an installer, because i am a donkey in coding, but i think somebody can do it....

It may be cool to create an installer, including the Quake1 demo version (PAK0)

If i can have a webspace, i can upload all my PK3s for now....
