  • Weird Movement While Online.

I'll just let it be known that I'm on 56k (well, 28.8k to be exact ) and when I play online the movement is lagged about a half second from when I press the key. This is weird becase gunshots and damage from a weapon is right on. Is there something I can config to help this?

Ive been there, there being my parents house.
If youre not broadband I would recommend you go with a QuakeWorld client, as its netcode was written back during the day when a majority of players were on dialup, and the broadband player was rare. netQuake such as Qrack, JoeQuake or GLPro wor better for broadband.

WoW is a little less ping dependant from what I understand of it, and thus you would notice the ramifications of your connection more.

In Quake, those little 1/4 seconds matter a lot, especially with lightning and rockets.

tehChosenTwo, this is a link I dug up from a post I origionally made on singed.net before it went down. This is GlQuakeTen, and while it may be dark, that can be fixed.

This is the tool you'll need to help brighten things up a bit.
            http://www.quaketerminus.com/nqexes/idgamma.zip
edit: do not use idgamma.exe. Use NT.EXE.
dbl edit: I would reccomend useing the quake1 settings it suggests for you.

For a dialup player and for a newer player on a whole, quake.shmack.net and quake.ihoc.net are the best choices for servers.

Both of these servers have grappling hooks (bind "h" +hook) and if you use the grappling hook for primary movement, ping doesn't factor in much with a grappling hook.

You could try QuakeWorld to see if you like it, there is a Team Fortress installer in Files -> Mods, which is pretty much what gets played in the USA, although there is one good FFA server (Nobody's Alternative FFA) and I think they play some Clan Arena on the West Coast. If you do, you should FuhQuake or EZQuake which are both in the downloads section as well.

Btw, with your JoeQuake you should consider using Yellow No. 5's Texture Pack for JoeQuake (download link: Yellow No. 5 Texture Pack for JoeQuake EZ Installer - 8.9 MB). It looks awesome.

Where is he located? Servers where he doesnt have to go thru Kansas City might help route wise? He can try Fear.quakeone.com...? Chicago. That's what I did while on dial up. Played mostly server that surrounded Illinois. Then others when I thought the Porno Kings wouldn't be online hogging the lines!!!

Runequake is NO GOOD for dialup!!! bad baker!! LOTS of people play there , which means much more lag, and lots of runes, gibs, and all sorts of other particles emitted from the runes are flying around, which creates MORE lag!

Believe me, I've used a 56k modem and lagged to death on the runequake server. I found that if I went to a CA or RA server, my packetloss and icons were reduced greatly.

Play on CA (it has mods to reduce lag), or port 26002 quake.shmack.net, or RA.

I live in Minnesota so that Chicago server might be my best bet, but do people play on it?
