In the console for YOU on LAN, type: disconnect; maxplayers 16; map dm3
In the console for YOU, type: status (you will see your ip address like 192.168.1.8 )
In their console type: connect 192.168.1.8 (or whatever number you saw typing status)
DarkPlaces does not have LAN server discovery that works. The idea of you hosting the server at your home and going somewhere else is unlikely to work unless you know a lot about your router settings.
I would honestly recommend instead downloading this free Quake 3 clone:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/oarena/
Has LAN game discovery, everything you need is in the menu, you can add bots easy, map selection is enjoyable, the menu is superior. It is a better game than Quake 3 in my opinion, and the game play is better than Quake 1 without using a mod.
And in Quake 1 either you know how to use a mod or you don't, it is all command line and people screw it up and you can never explain to someone new how to use one in less than a day and 12 posts. When I was new, I had no clue what to do either.
Happy hunting!Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Hi,
If you would be happy to use a different client and have a Raspberry Pi sitting around I would recommend 'QuakeOnLan' found at: Quake on LAN - Run a Quakeworld Server on a Raspberry Pi
I set it up when a few friends popped over for a LAN and its really simple. Could also take it to another friends house. Don't believe there is any bot support.
Cheers

You CAN still load up the original Quake deathmatch maps in xonotic too, if that is what you are aiming for.
