I've been having this ongoing discussion with myself about keeping old Quake 2 bots alive on modern Linux systems. Today, I came to a conclusion (with myself of course) and the result is quite satisfactory. It also helps out all those non-Linux Quake 2 players out there, who use some other OS called "Windows" (stupid name imho). These guys especially have no friends and will benefit from this!

Yearn for a Quake 2 server with actual (AI) opponents? Fancy a full on game of CTF with 10 players and don't care if they are human or not? N00b who wants to get some practise before hitting the real servers and getting your ass handed to you? Then this final solution is for you.

    Enjoy

This is not a thread on the old windows vs Linux debate, please. The point is to bring bots that only ran on much older systems back to life for people to play with and practise. It just so happens I have done all my gaming on Linux for 10 years now, and id Software have kindly obliged me. However, it provides challenges from time to time in the form of binary incompatibility and discontinued libraries.

I don't think DirectX11 is needed for Quake 2 anyway

Quake2 never tickled my fancy, but glad to see there is still support for it in some fashion or another

It's the one that got left behind really. There are great modern engines for quake/quakeworld and the guys on ioquake3 do fantastic work.

But apart from Yamagi Quake II there are very few modern engines for Q2 out there, and little or no mods (although Lithium II had an update out of nowhere on September 18, 2010). However, there IS interest in Q2, as the latest LMCTF Revival demonstrated. I don't do much development anymore myself, but I do try and provide Quake 2 scripts, servers and other solutions to those who want to play (especially on Linux). Plus, Quake2world is shaping up nicely and could be next year's surprise hit

This is true, and unfortunate. It's a great game and really deserves better.

            I'm doing one. It's Windows-only, Direct3D 9.
