  • ProQuake 4.45 Beta

A while ago I succesfully installed ProQuake 4.45 beta on my rMBP 15" with OSX 10.10.1 Yosemite. Everything works great.

But I don't like the fact that Quake1's PAK files are located "outside" of the application. I like everything where it belongs, so everything that game needs should be in the same directory.

I can obviously copy the PAK and CFG files in the \Macintosh HD\Applications\GLQuake.app\Contents\Resources directory, but I guess I'll need some variable in the config.cfg file to have the app look in that directory, instead of the one you can specify when you first launch the game.

Oh, found the solution myself, here's how:

    1) rename your current ID1 directory to something else.
    2) copy the pak files anywhere inside the GLQuake.app directory. Use terminal or "show contents" via a right click on the GLQuake.app icon in OSX's finder.
    3) Now launch GLQuake, it'll come asking for the location of the "id1" directory
    4) in the open file dialog, press the "/" key, this will open another dialog where you can manually type a path.
    5) use the "pwd" command in terminal to see the correct path for the new location inside the GLQuake.app directory.

Thanks for sharing Selder. Sorry I couldn't help as I don't run a Mac and by the sound of it it's much more complex, but it's good to see the Mac guys get some Quake goodness

      Kind regards

Your aren't kidding Monty, it appears some serious flaming hoops must be leapt through in order to assemble gaming on a Mac (at least for Q1)

        \Macintosh HD\Applications\GLQuake.app\Contents\Resources

        Geez.

Actually the build of ProQuake for OSX is fairly easy. For 'normal' users it's just "install, launch, browse for pak files, set graphical options, hit play, play". There really isn't anything to it. I just didn't like the "id1" directory somewhere else than where it should be, e.g. documents. I could already see me "what the h*ck is this doing here, delete!" in a few months.

OSX treats applications as "unbrowsable" directories (at least with a double click, you can right click and then go "show package contents"), but by doing so, it keeps everything the application needs in the same directory. Nice and clean.

I remember back in 1982, last year in high school I was in a vocational electronics program called "digital electronics" one guy in our class was really a computer nut, and he got a job somewhere instantly at a big computer firm - his boss liked him and let him borrow their Apple computer and bring it in for us to see in the class. He loaded up choplifter by Broderbund software from an external floppy and pulled out a lever type joystickj and started playing. Man we were all awed lol. Always wanted to get a Mac someday and play around.

I've owned a few mac mini's through weird channels obtaining them, but I've never paid for a mac product in my life.

I'm interested to see what their new closer-to-hardware low level API "Metal" in the future will be utilized for. Maybe they are gunning to become a viable platform for gaming. It's no secret that Microsoft/DirectX has garnered literally 80+ percent of the targeted OS/API for gaming since god knows when.

Hopefully Apple gets proactive in courting game developers to their platform, lord knows if a trashcan case in a tiny form factor can warrant an investment, so can gaming. lol
