  • Nearly GPLish E1Mx, START + DM2/3/6

I have spent some time playing around with the ID map sources and textures and have made some progress on compiling E1M1 thru E1M8, START, DM2, DM3 and DM6 without any ID Software textures, so they could be added to an OpenQuartz-style project.

    http://www.quake-1.com/files/maps/almost-gpl-maps.zip

During this process, I learned a few things:

    1. The shareware maps (start, e1m1-e1m have 296 textures! Argh!

    2. The Quake Retexturing Project didn't get 100% of the textures. I've already run into 30+ textures without a Quake Retexturing Project equivalent.

    These include (so far!):

    +1slipbot, altar1_3, black, carch03, carch04_2, column1_5, exit02_2, metal5_2, metal5_4, metalt2_2, plat_top1, rock1_2, rock4_1, sky1, sky4, slip1, tech01_1, tech01_6, tech01_7, tech01_9, tech11_2, twall2_2, twall2_5, twall3_1, uwall1_2, wall16_7, wenter01, window03, wswamp1_2
black is a trivial texture and sky1 and sky4 are skies, which technically probably weren't in the scope of the retex project anyway.

I have not been able to eliminate all the ID software textures, yet! When I do and compile these clones and am satisfied, I'll post the sources (I used the map sources without modification, and the status of the non-ID software textures is an interesting question) etc.

Right now, only a few of the maps look acceptable.

Updated the zip file. Maps Start, E1M1-E1M8, DM2, DM3 and DM6 are tentatively completed. I didn't touch the map sources at all

I will need to recompile most of them because I had one specific texture size wrong (which reoccurs on most maps) and if any remaining textures need swapped out (probably a few do) ... well, they are very solid but not perfect.

At worst the maps look like a slightly tasteless texture pack but overall they are pretty consistent for the most part, similar in quality to some of the prevalent texture packs of the past.

Not artistic but not bad either. Won't will awards, but not bad for something that probably (I hope) fits within the constraints of the GPL .. and if it needs some work to meet that standard, it can be done.

About the other maps? I don't plan on doing any other maps but others out there can take up that task. My goal was something approximately the equivalent of shareware compatibility plus the key maps (DM2, DM3 and DM6 --- the other DM maps are silly to me including, yes, DM4!).

Have you spoken with the other people working on a pack of the compiled GPL sources? Ie the QW guys and probably the inside3d/#qc people?
Seems like there are multiple attempts on doing it.

I've read the posts at Inside3D and Quakeworld.nu and plan on stopping by Quakeworld.nu and showing them this and linking to the sources after a verify these are 100% compatible with the existing ones and clean up a couple of textures.

Not perfect, need a handful of texture fixes, won't be hanging on the wall in any art galleries marvelling at my sense of style:

                    There's 38 maps, not 37...
                    16:03:04 <gb> when I put in a sng, I think I might need nails
16:03:30 <gb> the fact that only playtesting tells me that probably means that my mind is a sieve

An experimental pak0.pak and pak1.pak assembled from mostly Open Quartz, the Id1 map sources, Plague's Pack, a Dox axe, some free sounds off some free sound web sites to replace some of the not very good ones from Open Quartz and several null.wav's where missing sounds were. It doesn't look that bad.

Compatible with all servers. I haven't seen what stuff looks like playing Rune Quake with Shamblers and other stuff, but for the DM type of stuff it isn't bad at all.

Funny, the HUD is absolutely beautiful. The Open Quartz project did a superb job on that, the player model and the character set, in particular. I did modify the character set and the HUD a little -- I didn't like the "O" -- and I changed the HUD health "face" to a bar that goes to yellow and then red.

why does it look like the guy is holding a uzi? .. lol

Great job Baker, although this will need refining for prolly the next 3-4 months, and im sure that model/texture developers will gladly help, atleast those who direct their efforts to Quake in general.

I imagine it will take a lot of refining to make it perfect. :d

But it works very well. So many have put so much effort into this kind of thing over the years. The Open Quartz project must have been an enormous amount of work, the models different people have made over the years, the textures that the Quake Retexturing Project made, etc.

Last year at this time, the biggest hurdle was the maps (insurmountable problem) and everyone has scar3crow to thank for eliminating that killer of an obstacle.

The guy is holding an uzi because the OpenQuartz model for the SNG is an uzi. The NG model is a pair of pistols...
