A .map file is an uncompiled map.
A .bsp file is a compiled map.

If you mean you have the map loaded in Worldcraft then you need to compile it. In Worldcraft, you can press F9 to compile (it has an icon that looks like a gear at the end of the toolbar).

Func_Msgboard is basically the mapping center of the Quake universe. They have some excellent help threads.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I would use bsp. its a great map editor, and comes with the compilers, too.

That app is for converting a .bsp to a .map. Gods-sun wants to compile a .map into a .bsp

The most stable, limitless and fastest compilers can be found on this page: http://user.tninet.se/~xir870k/

I have used them on very troublesome maps that normal compilers would easily fail on, and they work without a hitch.

Lawls. Doing that is way easier. I use the tools that ORL linked, as well. Be sure to read the docs, there's a lot of options that expand your control over the map's appearance and such.
