I like Seven's shader'd portals, but when building for machines with little grunt or without shader support, I considered the non-shader textures - both the QRP and rygel ones were lacking, so I rolled my own:
It uses norm and edited luma of the rygel pack, two edited star textures from starnetblog for the diffuse and gloss, and some stuff I generated using GIMp.

I quite like this one because once you see it moving, it glitters as the stars wink in and out, which creates a small illusion of depth, which is cool.
