  • Seismic Dev Thread

    Wasn't sure where to stick this, so I'll put it here.

    To reiterate: Seismic will be a free multiplayer quake. Not free as in GPL free, but free nonetheless. Frikbots will be provided for Singleplayer. ONE map will be provided to play on, and I'll try to go all out to make it look nicer than the original DM3.

    Modellers, GFX, and sound guys who wish to help should download and examine theme material:

    I require for completion of project:

    Modeller:
    1. One Player model. Should comply with all standard quake player.mdl frames / animations. Extra anims could include shooting while running, swimming, shooting while swimming, climbing out of the water. Please append all extra anims AFTER the standard player model frames. If vwep is desired, I'll need seperate models for the player using each weapon.

    2. Weapon models, specifically -
    g_shotg (for when the player dies while using the regular shotgun), if nobody wants the shotgun with Dox's model pack, then I also need a animated v_ model for what takes its place.
    g_shot2 (if nobody wants the SPAS-12, make me something Quake2 SuperShotgun-esque instead with g_shot2 and v_shot2 models)
    g_nail (machinegun)
    v_nail2 and g_nail2 (nailgun)
    g_rock and v_rock (Grenade Launcher. Please consider the fire rate of the original GL when designing this)
    g_rock2 (rocket launcher)
    g_laser and v_laser (may use slapmap's g_lance instead, dunno)
    g_rail and v_rail (I already have something for these)

    Powerups -
    Can of Whup-ass (Quad)
    Hockey Mask (Invulnerability)
    The One Ring (Invisibility)
    Package of Shrooms (biosuit, gives regeneration instead, should have something Mario-esque on the label)

    v_ models should include hands where appropriate. This is NOT Tribes1 where you can shoot stuff with no hands!

    Sounds:
    1. Every Powerup needs sounds. The Hockey Mask should be a joke about Jason. Everything else you have creative license on it, provided I like how it sounds.

    2. Announcer. Like UT and Q3A. I need the usual sprees, frags left, impressive, etc. Must sound similar to UT and or something from a Bruce Campbell movie. Female voices are permitted.

    Once I have everything I need, I will assemble it together and throw it up somewhere for everybody to download and play it.

      Interesting to say the least. Let's see what progress this gets and see if we can make it a movement and bring back quake but for free ;]

        Meh, why bother then...?

        Are you going to rewrite the QC from scratch? I don't think there is another legal way around the GPL otherwise.

          QC can't be used? I was under the impression we could ,replace assets,and use only gpl compliant stuff,etc. and reach a Quakeone.com hostable free download.

          Didn't MadGypsy rewrite QC or something? (im being serious)

            Read what I wrote, then think about it again.

            Where EXACTLY did I specfically state ANYTHING about the QC source?

            If you think for a minute that I'm trying to sidestep the GPL, think again.

            Note Dox's license, which I read to be Non-Profit Public Domain with accreditation (and thus fine for anything but commercial exploitation)

            Thus, I cannot state that the final result of this project is 100% GPL "Free", because parts of it (art assets) are not GPL. What I CAN do however, is release the final product (for free), explicitly state what parts of it are GPL (and release sourcecode / point to the original source if unmodified) and what parts are NOT GPL, and provide the original license for those parts. (which I gather from reading the GPL 2 License, do not constitute a violation.)

            GPL Engine, progs.dat and QC source, do not constitute the project as a whole.

            I understand where you are coming from though. You dislike "Free Quake" projects, because you would rather people buy and play Quake instead.

            Do not be assy though and presume that you can kill off anything you do not like with inferences of GPL Violation Shitstorms, okay?

              I did not see anything about QC, I made my own assumption. I did not accuse you of planning to violate anything.

              You dislike "Free Quake" projects, because you would rather people buy and play Quake instead.
              On the opposite! I prefer fully free projects because they enable others to continue working on them if developers leave or if people want to do their own changes to it!

              A project like this could aim really high (inclusion into all the Linux distributions) if done as fully GPL or GPL + similarly free media license.

                No biggie, I suppose its partially my fault for not being fully explicit in defining what "free" meant. (But this is a dev thread! It's not supposed to be a lawyer meeting!)

                We'll see. A lot depends on how much help I get from the Fellowship of the Seismic.

                Thus far, its me (wondering how I got talked into this), .plan (he looks good on paper, but this is a real fight!) agreeing to fight a Computer, Programmer's Notepad, and Jackhammer, at Rivendell Stadium (in front of all the elves), then finding out that I might also have to fight the Blender and the Cooledit, in addition to the other three. All at once. At the same time. With nothing but a half full bag of Legos.

                Oh, and mindz is the ringside announcer.

                  I know a mapper who could help,two of them actually.replacement textures for the map are needed, we're doing dm3.

                  Zop you've did dm3again and 150dm3,could you do a gpl compliant map dm3?/r00k.you pulled together BlanQuake can you put together a dm3 using free either CC/GPL/whatever we can use thats legal dm3?


                  romero's gpl map design + gpl compliant map textures with sources should be legal.

                  all engine's that utilize map repository will cover getting it in peoples hands...

                  We could do this, gpl compliant map sits in repository's, Seismic is actually a mod that runs off Darkplaces/DirectQ/Qrack, which those are download ready already.
                  Map sits on repository, anyone can snag modern engine and "connect anyserver running dm3.bsp"

                  Is that a broken "freequake" or?

                    I've seen dm3again...not too comfortable with what happened to the computer room (no offense). Downloading 150dm3 right now, I'll let you know what I think. I don't have a problem with including them, but you should ask Zop if he'll put the mapsources up somewhere for me to look at.

                    I'd like to include my own take on dm3 in the final product when it's done.

                    I'd prefer to finish a one download basic release before it gets played anywhere, given how WIP everything is at this point. Don't have a problem with keeping it a mod. Just extract to dir, add exe of choice, run.

                    The thing I really need help with is the modelling and maybe sounds.

                        GPL 2.0 is fine.

                        Models should be in Dox's style, if not thats okay too, just as long as its consistent. Weapons MUST come as pairs. (worldmodel and viewmodel)

                        I need:
                        Player model (needs all original player.mdl frames as baseline)
                        Weapons

                        Model detail levels...how about:
                        g_ 880 tris
                        v_ 1500 tris

                        I'm thinking on par with Original Half-Life LoD perhaps?

                        If making newly imagined fresh set of weapons:
                        1. Axe / Knife / Wrench, whatever floats your boat
                        2. Slug Shotgun (Rem870 WP is fine, again, needs matching set, quality level above)
                        3. (super) Shotgun (Don't defy logic, if it looks like it needs to reload after every shot, don't do it, unless you find long reload - high damage acceptable)
                        4. Machinegun (Dox used a double barrel rippergun, if you don't want that, do an UZI SMG, in the style of the HACX mod for Doom2)
                        5. (super) Nailgun (I'm thinking of sorta adding something like Q4's homing nails, minus zoom, could look sorta like Q3's machinegun?)
                        6a. Grenade Launcher (whatever you want, just remember the rule with #3 above)
                        6b. Sniper Cannon (M79ish thing with EOTech on top, single shot, takes forever to reload, takes place of SoA's Prox, hitscan explosion, announcer may say "Terminated!" if you manage a direct hit)
                        7. Rocketlauncher (Whatever you think works, remember rule with #3)
                        8. Lightning Gun (Make whatever you think looks like a good lightning gun, viewmodel must be center of screen like original)
                        9. Laser Cannon (Up to the artist)
                        10. Railgun (also up to the artist)

                          Shadowborg, by computer room, you mean the room that they call SNG boxes? Unfortunately, it is actually unfinished- rather, I had no idea for it, and didn't get around to doing anything. Most of the good changes were Frenzy's ideas, which seem to work. The only thing I did on my own was making the extra waterway to the outside area. If I could, I would also retroactively edit the water texture, which is just one I clicked on without much thought.

                          150dm3 has a pretty amusing story... I made it much, much earlier on, before I was into CAx, so I lucked into chosing the level they love. I had it hosted for years (thanks, Slot) before someone (Mark/Mom) ran into it last year. I then fixed all the texture issues (I think), since the community was energetic about it.

                          Far as I know, the only issue with releasing the maps is ID's textures. There have been retexturing projects over the years I've read/heard about, so I'm guessing someone out there would allow their use. Mindz- I don't think allow map downloads would circumvent that well- then it would be the host server that would come under fire, if a lawyer were to care.

                              CapNBub's player models have issues that need to be resolved.
                              Missing faces and the like.
                              I requested he fix them, but i havent seen him in here in a while.
                              The models are very good, provided you can fix the issues, i would love to see them used in a csqc mod (skeletal animations ftw).

                              That said, they are clearly derivitive works, and so cant be legally used in a gpl product.
