    Hi Gents,

    It's been like... 15 years since my last post? Hope you guys are doing fine.
    Recently I've started messing about with AI upscaling and I concluded that our good old quake monsters would make a perfect test subject!

    Without further ado here are the textures so far, I'm struggling to find spare time for normal maps and the dog texture is such a mess that no AI model is capable of making any sense of it but I'll figure it out

    some very nice textures. I like the Hellknight and the Shambler most. Can you make a .pk3 out of this? I have to try it ingame. Again - very nice:-)

      It's time to unleash the most modern weapons on Quake


      Really outstanding results you and the AI made. Extremely detailed.
      You can see fur, skin folds, hairs, ...
      The bodies from ALL monsters are outstanding. Without any doubt the BEST I have ever seen.
      Very well done. That would have taken years for a human.



      My highlights:

      For the 1st time in my life I saw a really fitting face for the wizard/scrag.
      I fell in love with it at once !! My absolute favorite.
      Due to the mix of human and monster, the perfect face only existied in my head ... until now !

      Also the face from shalrath is amazing. Even saliva can be seen. Yes !

      As well as the Ogre. His face is perfect !



      The zombie comes next. Still human but undead (in a semi-realistic way). Great !
      The Hellknight is pure and brutal, as webangel said. Love him.
      The Enforcer "one-eye" is also very well made. Very faithful.
      The Fishes teeth and skin are also very good.



      The ones who need some more attention in my opinion are:

      Player: He looks to "normal" (though I never see him in Single player)
      Soldier: Like the player he looks to "normal". He needs his mouth open (that is how I always imagined the original texture). Filled with insaneness and madness in his eyes.
      Shambler: Only his theeth needs rework, as the AI could not differ between teeth and "rest" it seems. In-Game you can see the effect more clearly.
      Knight: The original textures is very very blurred in one part of his face. That is why the AI could not reconstruct it. It now looks with High Resolution out of place.
      Demon: His teeth are human. And should be more like the shalrath ones in my opinion. Otherwise its perfect. Even can see fur on his back. Love it.

      Tarbaby is missing But its the monster you really cannot see in detail at all in-game due to its speed. So no problem.

          Wow... AI upscaled anything usually makes my brain go to sleep mode because, most of the time, AI is great for generating ugly/blury/so-called-hires garbage.

          Not this time.. hell knight looks amazing as well as enforcer, scrag or zombie. Looking forward to the final release.

            Back to the your mentioned issue d1554573r: The Dog

            This model brought many headaches over the years to many people like us.
            It looks like an accident (kind of) and the UV-mapping doesnt really fit as well.

            That was one of the reasons, capnbubs remade the dog from scratch.
            And he did a fantastic job !
            Absoluteley faithful and better in every aspect compared to original dog model.

            Best thing: It can be used by every Quake engine as far as I remember.

            But if you still want to try your hands on the original dog model, here are some improvements, that other people made to the skin.
            So that the AI can better recognize its shapes and details. And hopefully the outcome will be better and suits your needs.

              Seven raised an interesting question that exceeds the infamous case of dog model. These new monster textures look so good that it would be almost criminal to wrap them around in many ways bugged classic ID1 models.

              There are models by capnbubs, but there are even better alternatives - Andrew ported enhanced monster models from Quake re-release back to pure mdl. And not only ID1 monsters, but bad guys from Rogue and Hipnotic as well. Just imagine how good these new monster textures would look on those fixed models. Original ID models will always cripple HD textures no matter how good they look.

              D1554573r, your monster textures are the best I have ever seen. For me, you even topped Reforged HD monsters. Please, please, please... do not let the old borked ID1 models hold you back. let this baby of yours shine :-)

                Thanks guys! I'll check the other options for dog texture the problem with the OG one is a strange angle, not the quality but the other model might be the way to go. I've never seen those improved models once I finish off skins for the original models I can try getting those upscaled too.

                With regards to the method I use, you are correct Seven I am using supir upscaler in ComfyUI, and finally for small tweaks or regenerating part of a scene I'm using automatic1111's stable diffusion web UI.

                If you want to play around with something online krea.ai is the best upscale I know and they have a free tier as well.

                In the meantime I've replaced the knight skin, the one I posted before got there by mistake

                  Quake guy's axe looks like some kind of Necronomicon horror, which I guess is sort of fitting.

                  Weird stuff inspiring new thoughts/avenues. So it goes.
