Do you guys ever think about putting all your talents together, making something commercial, like with the modified Quake engine?

Like IDK a Halloween game, some indie thing to be sold on Steam, probably real cheap.

You know, before the world ends?

    Hi GT,
Some sort of collaboration between the quake creative gurus does sound interesting. There are a lot of telented mappers. engine coders, graphic artists within the community and the prospect of them contributing to a project sounds very attractive. Whether a commercial game is the answer I don't know as a lot of people just do it for the love of the game, but I imagine something like new scary, horror (holloween) based arcane dimensions type game would be interesting.

    Kind regards

Thanks for the response, Mr. B. Yeah, I understand doing it for the love of the game. Unfortunately, someone like me, for example, (currently) can't justify investing the time without the promise or hope of some kind of financial pay-off. But I do appreciate all the "pro bono" community efforts.

I thought about replying to this thread a few times, but wasn't quite sure what to say.

In my head the following are to some degree the above:
        1. Doombringer (made by Kristus and others, who posted here many times back at the time). [DarkPlaces]
        2. Wrath: Ruin of Aeon (made at first by KillPixel who posted here many times back at the time). [DarkPlaces]
        3. Nexuiz / Xonotic. LadyHavoc was one of the main people behind it and Xonotic is very active today and for years maintained the engine but now GitHub says they are not officially affiliated with DarkPlaces, probably because the European Union draconian laws. [DarkPlaces]
        4. OBJECT N on Steam - by KleskBY [DarkPlaces at one point, and then my Zircon Engine since Fall of 2023. KleskBY told me tons of things that would make DarkPlaces better and I implemented all of them in Zircon. Although one aggressive idea needs a bit more work.]

Making a game takes a lot of time and coding is the toughest part. And then you have "is it fun?"

Part of me wonders if the joy of Quake back in the day wasn't in part being around people you enjoy being around.

I played Rocket Arena, CA+, RuneQuake, some Quake at GCHQ with Mr. Burns + Polarite + Peg + others and I played some FFA every once in a while with Gunter and Gulliver-trans and company.

My absolute favorite was playing Rocket Arena or Clan Arena and drinking beer with Phenom, Yellow No. 5, Mindzfield, Hydro, R00k and the other regulars.

I don't know if it would have been as fun if the company was different.

Thanks for compiling that list, Baker. So Object N is free? Did they ever charge for it?

I've seen people move from game to game as a group. So I suspect for them it was about the particular group. Or became that.

If you were all conveniently local and could LAN party, that was even better.

For me, I played so long I had to make new friends, but new friends were always available (and some of the old ones even showed up here for a while). But I have found that there are always new nostalgia points to be found or made as I go thru life, whether I want them or not. I have also been a loner at times, constantly changing names. As if Quake itself was my friend -- Quake the never-changing.

I will say, I did enjoy playing with all of you, as well :-)

Anyhow, to work with the right group of people on a project would be ideal, I suppose.

OBJECT N is free on Steam. As far as I know, KleskBY did not have a team -- it was a one person project.

I know Doombringer (Kristus) had a group, KillPixel (Wrath: Ruin of Aeon) definitively had a group.

Nexuiz had a huge group back in 2005 with the most important people being LadyHavoc, Divverent (current head DarkPlaces engine contributor AFAIK and runs Xonotic project), someone I don't know named Lee Vermeulen who I think was the project lead. But they had maps and models by hordes of contributors, at one point in 2009 Nexuiz had a Gamestop promotion.

At some point, a major rift occurred and Nexuiz -- always open source, forked to become Xonotic as the lead (Lee) sold the game and the trademark. Google can tell that story if needed.

KleskBY is, as far as I know, the only singular person to do such ambitious projects single-handledly and put them on Steam like what he did with OBJECT N.

            >> I have also been a loner at times, constantly changing names.

Haha, well I never really picked the name Baker. I happened to be using the name that day and Slot Zero was on Shmack and asked various people to register at RuneCentral -- like he said to me on the server something like: Hey, Baker just created a forum would you register there. Then I probably said: Sure!

That's how I got my name, haha.

Just in case anyone has read the above post and is looking for that forum, the url is http://forums.runecentral.com/ . Sadly for the last month or so its been down. Slot is aware of the problem and I believe its fair to say that it's on his "to-do" list.
The Quake server quake.shmack.net has been up and running throughout. I Hope this helps

              Kind regards
