Ok, after some careful consideration and feedback from the guys at inside3d.com, I decided to start from scratch again. This time I aim to make the player model more steam/cyberpunk oriantaited with more muscular and brutal features. New pics up soon .
I hope you don't mind me asking, but just out of interest what application do you use for the Quake [re]modelling? Is it a commercial application or a downloadable freebie?
I have seen some of the revised weapons people have created and now your model and thought it might be fun to have a go. Any ideas?
Kind regards
Monty

@Mr Burns: I use LightWave 3D, which is a commercial program, todo all of my modeling and UV mapping. I then use Poser Pro for the animation (also commercial), and Milkshape 3D (also commercial) for rigging, animation and tweaking. I also use Photoshop for all of my texturing.
If you want to give 3D modeling a go, you can either try the Softimage XSI Mod Tool or Blender. Wings 3D is a also a good one. All of them are free, but some, like XSI, come with limitations.
@Mind: Yeah, that's what i thought. I'll make a few concepts sketeches in the next few days and take it from there. Like I said, I'll be going for a more brutal musculine look combined with steam/cyberpunk elements.

Yes, the Quake guy like Mindzy said seemed less a soldier and more a brute.
Think of it like this: the soldiers in crappy games I hate are more about the gear, the binoculars and the bullshit.
In Quake, the Quake guy isn't about his equipment ... it's him against the environment he has found himself in (manly).
He doesn't have 56 types of guns or alternate fire or fancy remote detonation bombs -- and he doesn't need them or want them!

@baker: Do you think I should keep the wrist communication radio on him then?
Eh, use your imagination sir.
My comments aren't to instruct but to vaguely relate what I know about Quake.
Acts of creations, like what you are doing, require imagination.
Should you be able to complete a Quake player model in md3 that is good or great, you'll be a hero. If it is great you never know, you could end up being a legend.
But animating a model is so much work I've heard.
