Does this clarify things at all? These are from Call of Cthulhu, the PNP RPG Sandy Petersen worked on before he went to ID software...

I think for quake the mixed what Senban posted with a bit of the creature from the Beast in the Cave story from Lovecraft, but that's just an opinion.

Do we really need to argue about what the Shambler was originally supposed to be? I think enough of us want to see a furry white version that is a little less Doom3-like to warrant an alternate skin.

it really looks stupid to have this high quality skin only to then decapitate it and end up with the original low res gibbed head
