  • Tzunami: GPL Quake Client Development

Hey again folks, topic title says it all.
I'll update and visualize progres in this thread form now on
    Topic started here: http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-tal...ke-client.html

    Project details:
Project name: TZUNAMI (You know a great wave that comes after earthquake? ) "Z" instead of "S" is there on purpuse.

Project is going to be based upon all abandoned efforts of the community to make free quake happen and I'll try to fill the gaps they left.

I'll use community available textures but they are oing to be edited and replaced (a lot of them ...) to remove any doubts about their legitimacy.

I'll update this post tommorow since im tired as f%%% today and im going to bed, goodnite folks and have fun with conchars and conback i just made.

Looks like you are off to a great start. That charset looks killer.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I'd love to see Quake using the Caslon Antique font, it just looks so Quake-ish and appropriate.

Since You're calling it "Tzunami" why not design a "T" logo that mimics the iconic "Q"?

A small bit of extra awareness:

Inside3d Forums :: View topic - Tzunami: GPL Quake Project

Really, in principle, you should be a member of the Inside3D forums. Veteran Quake modders talk and exchange ideas and such there.

Is that character set completely original or based on a GPL font? Remember that you can't go about using licensed fonts to make GPL-compliant derivative works.

Actually i plan to design a trident logo like the Neptunes weapon
I found something that looks like what I've got in mind on google:

So my design is going to be very alike to this one above.

            @baker
Indeed, I dunno why i haven't done that by now.

            @Skutarth
We'll see how the GPL turns out, that's the main target but some files can be non GPL. Anyhow there are ways to make a GPL releases with non-GPL content but it requires non-standard GPL compliant license. (check GNU website if You are interested in this matter)

The worst option will be a COPYLEFT non-commercial license also list of few examples is on the same GNU page ... [You can actually compile and sell GPL stuff but You have to release sources to public (sounds pointless? Not really - imagine hitting xbox live or psn networks or even iphone with GPL games for example)]

It can always take form of public domain - aka no license for the complete package (and it is GPL compliant) and each part of the pakage to include its own licensing (so far only problematic part is that creative commons soundtrack mentioned in earlier post but I can make my own non-cover one thou if I get pi## off by licensing)

That font is very hard to read. I highly suggest you use one that is very easy to read.

I can make an alternative set, since i got a template ready its not a problem.
I'll share templates fonts and others once i deal with gfx complete stuff is going out to public.

NON-GPL content recipe is easy btw, Client installation files don't have to be GPL them self the strict way they may contain 3rd party stuff. Heres the trick set up SVN with ALL source files, lets take font for example: svn would contain source file .xcf (gimp) and link to font and author and notice about the license of the font. This way project source remains GPL with proper GPL COMPLIANT LICENSE applied. (Becouse the project sources remain publicly available)

Well it's more complicated but that was just the example.

Fonts are generally problematic lemme qoute someone:

Fonts occupy a strange place between software and graphics; Misunderstanding about how they actually work is rampant. I offered a number of fonts that I'd designed (and packaged) to Debian five or six years ago -- I even offered to license them under the GPL, unmodified. The only thing that came of it was a heated discussion among the Debian developers over whether TTF or PFB files counted as source code or binary.
                    source: http://typophile.com/node/31738

So 100% properly GPL licensed fonts are hard to find

                      A little off-topicness...
A new font for Ubuntu is being designed, and Canonical intends to distribute it under an open license when it's done.

Well we got to sort free fonts into 2 categories:
Free for non-commercial use and those that come with no readme/license.
1st one falls into Creative Commons category, secound is a classic Public Domain resource - then its a GPL. Ofc if someone havent forgot to put readme in the zip...

Licensing stuff isn't actualy off-topic becouse it determines what kind of resources can be used for the project. I need to read more about CC mixed with GPL in a bundle.

Licensing will determine what kind of textures, sound samples, fonts or even models can me used. Unfortuanatly most fonts and models on the web are CC.

There isn't a problem mixing CC and GPL except if you do things like try to compile a Creative Commons texture in a GPL map source creating a Quake map that is license incompatible.

                          Case in point:

ioQuake3 is a GPL Quake III engine .
Urban Terror is a free game, but not GPL.
The installer is a single .exe or .zip.

There is no problem distributing an installer or zip with both CC and GPL content.

Thats, what I expected i got no intention of recompiling maps with CC textures no such GPL/CC mix will happen. Im not certain though about the complete package licensing, or does it even need it? Not that im eager to do extremly well documented licensing but from my expiriance with gnu\linux guys they are very sensitive in this matter and without it such package never sees the offical repositories.

The *only* Creative Commons license that would stand a chance of such a thing ...

                              "Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike (CC-BY-SA) v3.0"

All the rest ... "non-Commercial" or version 2.0 or version 2.5 would be likely be rejected.

It is clear that the licenses that contain a NonCommercial or a NoDerivatives restriction (e.g. Attribution-NonCommercial, Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, Attribution-NoDerivatives, Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives ) will never be able to comply with the DFSG because these violate basic principles articulate in the DSFG — specifically, DSFG 1 which requires that a licensee be able to sell copies of the work, DSFG 3 which requires a license to permit the making of derivative works and DSFG 6 which proscribes discrimination against any field of endeavor.
