  • Authentic Model Improvement

Update 21/03/2013: Player model added to pack.

    Current Features:

Player - New model, texture and animations.

Dog - New model, texture and animations. New head gib.

Grunt - New model, texture and animations.

    For Modders:

    Complete .blend files included.
UV maps for new textures included in high resolution.

    Downloads:

    Authentic Models Pack

After playing around with Quake for a bit the past few days I decided that the models could do with a bit of improving.

I decided to start by attempting to update the Grunt. I really like the original aesthetic of quake so I worked with the original texture and rebuilt the model from the ground up. I'm also working with the original .mdl format so these will work even in vanilla Quake.

      looks nice

although i still prefer using hi-poly remakes.

but it would be great if you could do the same for knight & hellknight, zombie and dog, since for those there arent any hi-poly remakes made yet

and it would be nice to have some slightly more hi-poly models for them in the meanwhile.

      .

and your grunt remodel looks great
      got some questions though:
does it use the original texture from ID or a modified texture?
and can you use hi-res textures that are already available for the original ID model on this model?

      .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
      > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

        Thanks!

Yes it uses the original texture so any hi-res texture replacements should work just fine. Once the animations are finished I'll upload it for people to test.

cool, thats great, that it just uses the original texture, and thus using hi-res replacement textures on it should work fine

Your grunt looks like it has skinny jeans on?

I don't like how the legs look but the rest looks ok!

if someone could remake a player model that looked authentic but modern we/QW community could gain some volume.
well i think a new player model will allow a free download for online games.

Yes there are. Some of available remodels have either cute, grotesque vibe to them, they also stand out of extremely low-poly environment.
Pimped up mode is also far from being the only proper mode of playing it.

If it comes to order of priority imo:
                      - Player model for multiplayer crowd.
                      - Ogre and Shambler ( the most iconic monsters, also one of the worst original models ).
                      - Any other monster without updated model available.
                      - The rest of the cast.

I may be wrong, but I think that updated model is the one on the left and the one with skinny legs is original.

Quake HD: Embrace the decline and have some guilty pleasure with it, or join a club for monocled gentlemen at quaddicted and play Quake the way it's meant to be played.

Since I built the model from scratch it is unusable until I've finished the animations, they are almost done though so I should be able to release it later today. I only have the running, firing and walking animations left.

I'm planning on doing the dog and the player next.

                            Hello capnbubs,

                            You sir, are amazing !
                            Your soldier model is magnificent.

I like your details, like his nose (now the soldier finaly has one)
I like his trousers back-pockets sticking out.
I like his weapon handling. It is not sticked to the body (left hand).
Also the "weapon throw away" animation when killed (like in Socks "In the shadows" mod).

The animations are all realy smooth. Loving the pain + death animations.
                            Simply fantastic !

Only thing, his legs are a tiny bit too wide opened in general (but that is complaining on a high level)

You proved once again that Quake models does not need insane polycounts to look beautiful.

Thank you very much for your work, effort and sharing !
This is a keeper for me.

                            Best wishes,
                            Seven

PS: Thank you for also doing the unused "load" animation.

Thank you for your glowing review! C:

I'm intending to use that loading animation in my mod to signify they are going to fire a grenade.

I might include the blender file in the download in case people wanted to poke around in the file or edit it for their own purposes.

I am also considering trying to repaint the model on a 512 by 512 texture map with new UV mapping for a bit more detail in the textures, but keeping it as close to the originals as possible, just better quality. I won't replace this version with it though as it would break compatibility with high res texture packs.
