Well..... this was unexpected and very sad news.
EA will indeed be shutting down online access/support for some very popular older games still played widely worldwide.
Due to re recent announcement by gamespy to end their online services for selected games, EA has chosen to follow in those footsteps.
There is no doubt that most of us here play these games currently, just a few mentioned:
Battlefield 2 for PC (I still play this one)
Battlefield 2142 for PC and Mac (I still play this one)
Crysis 2 for PC
FIFA Soccer (Many of them)
What does this mean for us?: No more multilayer, which basically voids the game useless. Since a login to EA/Gamespy servers is required to authenticate users.
There are currently a few petitions on-going, but knowing what EA thinks of its customers this is not promising. Do I really want to purchase another EA game..... not with this stink in the air.
Independent companies (GameRanger) may have a new found popularity if this all goes downhill.
