  • Buy Your Own Cable Modem

Friendly reminder... both Comcast and Time Warner Cable have increased their modem rental fees to start the new year. Comcast's fee is now $10/month and Time Warner Cable is now $8/month. You can buy your own modem and save the cost of the fees in less than a years time.

I personally bought the Motorola Surfboard SB6141. Currently it sells for $90 on Amazon.

I am on Time Warner Cable. 11 months of fees is $88. The modem to buy is $90. It's a no-brainer.

Stop giving these monopoly corporations free money! Buy your own modem!

Please note, you must (or should) buy an approved modem.

Also, beware buying "non-retail" packaging modems. Sometimes you'll get a previously activated or used modem and you may have problems trying to activate it with your ISP. Pay the extra few bucks and get the retail packaging.

TWC in NY here and I've been telling this to my wife for the last few years. Maybe with the latest price hike I can convince her..

We currently have the phone thru them as well for emergencies when the grandma's are over watching our boy. I recently heard as it stands now if you own your own cable modem they "can't" charge for the modem just for the TWC phone service.

I'd buy my own modem, but my ISP doesn't allow me to use my own modem, we have to use theirs. It's just an Arris phone modem, nothing special about it. I would prefer to have my own box that had phone, modem and a router all in one. One box, one plug.

When he said *MUST* buy a approved modem, DO IT. If you don't and you have ANY tech issue, the very moment that you tell them what make and model modem you have, and it isn't an approved modem, they will typically shut down ALL service/tech requests until you comply. Been there, done that.

Your tech service will go down the shitter faster than a turd swirling the porcelain......

One day I had a lengthy discussion about how the manufacturer of a product that is implementing a technology be it DSL or Cable =/= incompatibility, and I eventually got them to proceed.

Comcast does not charge me a rental fee for my modem. When I signed up I flat asked them to waive the fee before I switched from AT&T U-Verse to Comcast. They took a few minutes and consulted management who granted my request just to get me to switch. I pay $107.20 a month for 105 / 20 mbps and 288 channels.

You can BS them to the T as long as you know how to talk to them.

Shortly after I signed up I seen a charge on my bill for 'Data over use'??? I was like wtf is this crap? I called them up and they said I went over 250GB's for the month and charged me an additional $10 per 50GB which I was only charged $8.31 for the over use. At that point I still had AT&T U-verse as a secondary option since it was not disconnected yet and I told the lady to cancel my account or waive the fee and they took it off and raised my data cap limit to 500GB for no additional charge.

IF the FCC has their way, most of the bs that happens with ISP's will become null/void.
I think the FCC would do good to get rid of that dingo they have.
