I read there was a leak, a low-res web version tho' I think the shows production deserves higher definition.

why not wait for the HD versions (like 720/1080p) to be released each week?

This is bad..... previously when they asked GoT producers if they were ok with all of the downloads on torrent sites they said they love it and they're ok with people sharing it and watching it, the more fans, the better. However, this is going to hurt them a lot with HBO views, and I imagine it won't go over too smoothly.

I wonder how much one of the guys working in the studios got paid for this... must've been a huge sum.

I feel like this is a bad move on the part of the "pirates". You're going to attract a ton of attention toward torrent sites now and government regulation. They already started off with megaupload, took down isohunt, and several other huge torrent sites. There are only a few left that are releasing content, but more pop up luckily.

Why not just be happy with releasing HQ episodes after it shows on tv?

Read the article.... it said "The first copies, leaked from a review screener, appeared less than 24 hours ago on the private tracker IPT and quickly spread across public torrent sites." , there is a chance it was not a 'guy working in the studio'.
