Graphics Card Install - Help!

Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (220-G2-0850-XR) - PCPartPicker

I am installing the EVGA GTX 970 FTW+ video card and am confused on how to hook it up to the power supply. The power supply instructions say "Connect the 6/6+2 PCI-E cables to your graphics card(s). NOTE: Do not attempt to plug an 8-pin PCI-E cable into a 6-pin connector without first detaching the two extra pins."

On the graphics card, there's a plug for 8 pins and a plug for 6 pins. The book shows a picture of someone plugging in the 6 pin end into the 6 pin plug on the card. Do I only need to plug only one cable from the graphics card to the power supply? I don't need to plug two plugs in? For the 6/6+2, which end goes to the PSU and which goes to the video card? What do you do with the spare +2?

You will need both plugged in, let the spare 2 dangle off to the side.

They should be keyed, which stops you from plugging them incorrectly.

Ok I figured it out. The cables were labeled VGA which also confused me.

ps : if you can, use two separated 8pin (or 6+2) and 6pin PCI-E power cables
your psu is modular so it shouldn't be an issue, this will just spread power draw across more components in the psu.

Don't forget, you must do this at the strike of midnight.

Just finished putting it together last night. Had to go to sleep so I didn't want to try to booting it up because if it didn't work, I'd have to stay up and try to fix it.

I was out of town last week for work so this week I've been trying to play catch up and haven't had much time to mess with it so it took longer than expected to put it together.

Tonight I will try to boot it up

I remember building one of my first PC's many years ago... I got everything installed and even did a decent wiring job... but it turned out some how the tiniest piece of solder on the motherboard was touching the metal case and fried the system... Don't do that!

That was a steal! I have no doubts that rig will see you through for awhile, it is also pretty awesome about those two free games you told me about!

It's really nice when ordering hardware they toss you a bone for your gaming rig to chew on! HA!
