Yep, I've read several of his novels about 12 years ago, and they were fine for me - pretty grim and creepy.

Read all of them as a teen,The Dunwitch Horror and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward stood apart for me.Also I read some of his scifi in a paperback but have not ever been able to find it again.I found him perhaps the most literate of all Horror writers but of the modern day my favorite is Clive Barker.You do realize they finally made movies of a lot of his works? At least 3 come to mind,Dagon,Reanimator,Necromicon,Also From Beyond and of course The Call of Cthulu. have been done as well as some lesser works based on his stuff though not credited.

I think what people did with the universe he created is often much more interesting than anything he actually wrote.

Like Eternal Darkness. Great game. But Lovecraft's works are often just kind of quaint.

I've actually listened to a lot more audio books of his work than actually read the real paper. I find them creepier that way. There are some nice ones on Youtube if you're interested.
