  • Steam Stream review.

Supposedly you can own multiple devices, and on your more powerful hardware can run Steam games streaming to another device.

So,im going to test MKX being run on my gaming rig, streamed over wifi to a laptop which im going to connect over HDMI to a big screen using USB controller to control the game.

Desktop MKX -> usb wifi dongle (ARRG) router -> laptop -> external display..

You can read about my experience in nerding out land here, hope you enjoy.

I use Steam streaming regularly between my main win10 machine and my linux box.
I was surprised how well it worked.
If possible though, run a cat6 (or cat5e) cable between the machines (or router).
It improved the performance considerably for me, I can stream 1080p@60 with very low latency whereas with wifi it could be a little inconsistent, with quite a bit more lag.
        Best of luck!

Adam my experience with it so far was mostly enjoyable.... but I ran into a crippling issue.

I can't get KEYBOARD -OR- CONTROLLER inputs to travel across the network. The streaming function? Flawless! The Launching of Game (MKX) via Laptop and it running on Desktop are 100% working.

But those fn inputs not working, that breaks the entire thing!!!

Everything is on WIFI, I have Cat6 that is long enough to stretch from my PC to the router but that isn't really an option my sister doesn't want me even neatly-wiring up.

If this is mandatory ( I don't know why it would be , I can access everything needed and can open/forward ports as needed if needed ?? ) I will convince my brother in law to help me ninja-wire in hardwired but that isnt even an option I want to entertain.

ok, well hardwiring will improve performance but I don't think it will fix the issue you are having. Everything should still function with wifi just a bit more laggy.

I know its a bit of a dumb question but, without using Streaming, does you kb, mouse & pad work fine with the laptop you have plugged into the TV?

If the controllers all work with Steam on the laptop then I don't know what would chamge when you pick "Stream" instead of just "play" (locally).

Here is the support page that does mention that there may be issues with some games.

I have found that some games just won't stream but for me, that has been mostly an issue with adding non'steam games in at the host side.

Hope it works out for you.

Re: hardwiring, it is worth the pain if you get your issues worked out.
Crawling around in the roof space, feeding cables down the cavities, then trying to fish them out through a tiny hole.
            All part of the fun!

Success lay with enabling Big Picture Mode & Setting up a controller inside Big Picture Mode.

100% works, and now that I have got it working I will put it down for a day or two and then comeback to it fresh to tweak it.

Now, an even harder task I want to tackle is this.

Something like in-home Streaming, except I'm gonna attempt to put my nephews Chromebook into the role of a client.

@Adam , any chance your kids are Minecraft wizards , and/or do you or they own a Chromebook?

              =)

Thanks for everything so far, you da man!

I don't have a Chromebook but from a quick google it would appear that you can't run the Steam client directly on it (on Chrome OS that is),
so no dice unless you are willing to modify it.

If you can modify it and it has an intel cpu rather than a Arm one,
then you can install linux and that works great as a Steam client.

Here are a few links to help you out:

5 powerful things you didn't know Chromebooks could do | PCWorld

Installing Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu etc, will allow you to install the Linux Steam client, then you can use your login info and some of your games will work straight away, depending on the power of your Chromebook.
Also you can then use it as a Streaming client.

As long as you can install the Steam client and the device can decode video streams then it should be able to function as a Steam streaming client to some degree.

Installing linux will also let you install Minecraft.

Something to be aware of is that if you have a lot of machines running your Steam profile then only one can be playing at anytime, unless you set the other machines to offline (which is great as you can all be offline but still play mp games with each other). Unfortunately when you're streaming this isn't an option, so if someone is using your machine as a host, you can't play games on it.

Adam I was able to get Minecraft on to his Chromebook by using Chrome Remote Desktop , it made it a lot easier. I had read about getting Minecraft onto a Chromebook using linux but, I wasn't too keen on that idea.

He has Minecraft now, just via Streaming. Whatever works right?

Chromebooks so far, do enough to be cool and don't do enough things to irritate the shit out of me, like not having 'ez' access to PlayStore lol.

I didnt read all the posts here, but, i have streamed from my i5 4690k machine to my laptop (core2 duo 6600) and it worked without me doing anything. All i did was hook up my laptop via cat5 cable, installed steam and it said i could Stream games that were installed on my main machine to my laptop.

So, I'd assume 1.> use an ethernet cable (lan) not wifi, 2.> have the game installed on one of the machines.

simple as that, yet kinda boring imho. u still need both machines on, so whats the purpose? my two computers are 3 feet apart

I can stream to a laptop thats using hdmi connection to a bigscreen tv and not have to have my tower physically @ the tv.

MortalKombatX on a bigscreen obviously was the endgame
It worked good across wifi in the time I've tested.
