  • Quake is old.

I can't help but get this feeling lately like Quake is so old, warn and tattered that the inevitable will happen sooner or later. This makes me ask, what will happen when its just me and its gone to the point where IHOC, Bomber, CHI and even Shmack no longer exists but are only a sweet memory of a time once long ago when I had so much fun and met so many people...

To me this is almost a shock to think of, Quake this far has surpassed the test of time, I have over $500 in new age games and Quake 1 gets 98% of my gaming time.

If there was a way to boost Quake 1 back into the glory it deserve and last for ever that would be awesome! But this is a pipe-dream. My hope is that some time soon Quake 1 is either replicated with updated engines but still maintains its gift to players, a true deathmatch experience.

    Nothing lives forever.

Chess is old. Battleship, Monopoly, Poker, Euchre, Checkers and Scrabble are old. Star wars is 20 years older than Quake.

Baseball was invented in the 1800's and people play that still, the same with football.

To me this is almost a shock to think of, Quake this far has surpassed the test of time, I have over $500 in new age games and Quake 1 gets 98% of my gaming time.
Where else can you find a near-infinite pool of people who you've known for 5+ years? Heheh.

If there was a way to boost Quake 1 back into the glory it deserve and last for ever that would be awesome! But this is a pipe-dream.
Certainty is something no one can really have, stranger things have happened.

Quake is like New York: "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!"

It is not a question of faith, it is only a question of time.

Grim is old, but we still talk to him!

Doom is old, and it is running damn strong.

Diablo2 is old and it still has players.

This makes me ask, what will happen when its just me and its gone to the point where IHOC, Bomber, CHI and even Shmack no longer exists but are only a sweet memory of a time once long ago when I had so much fun and met so many people...
You will do what any good capable fan will do, and start your own server and inform all of your friends who play Quake of it and email the sites that are still active about it as well? You know what you do in the absence of shmack? Start your own server.

My hope is that some time soon Quake 1 is either replicated with updated engines but still maintains its gift to players, a true deathmatch experience.
Darkplaces anyone? I know, Im supposed to say that - but I do consider it significantly updated (come on, how many modern engines can boast relief mapping and normal mapping?). Quake doesnt need to be replicated, we have the game code here, we have the engine code here. We are not the Blood community, we have every single resource needed to survive readily at our disposal.

For Quake to die calls for group euthanasia of a healthy adult in a world of squawling newborns.

Pretty much just DarkPlaces and FTEQW (I think).

Agreed. However, I did at one point think an updated Quake (with Q3BSP, normal mapping, the works) would be really cool, though not necessarily needed. I'm looking forward to Quake10Year.
          A signature? Oh dear.

dude i haven't played quake in 8 years and i fully expected there to be absolutely NO ONE still playing when i got back into the mix a week or so ago and there's still active servers. I'd say quake has passed the test of time and if these new games that are out haven't completely pulled quakers away permanantly, then they never will.

Quake isn't dead. but close to being dead. Noone plays the true quake - the way its meant to be played - original DM/team DM. Now all it is is mods and stuff.

oh, btw, single player id maps original - original quake singleplayer unless you bought it last year, then yes THAt is dead.
But the feel, spirit, and gameplay WILL live.
it might not be quake.exe. but apart of quake is in EVERY first person shooter thereforth....

I never said Quake is dead.

Monster, from what I understand Quake was ment to be very flexible on how it can be played. Quake DM is just another choice which just happens to not get alot of play and if you want to get technical about playing true Quake then your not looking for a FPS your looking for something more of a RPG

Quake will live as long as the community who plays it is not incompetent.

So stop being incompetent and play the game, mod the game, celebrate the game.

Quake isnt dying, but in this thread I see the faith of many a self-proclaimed fans dying. Da5id is supposed to be a legend, but he has no faith in Quake, he has no fanaticism for it as a fan should, "I'll play Q1 the odd time with you all for fun but Q1 is dead I'm sorry to say." What he is sorry to say is that he stopped playing a great game while others continued. He is sorry to say that he left a community that has stood the test of time. Quake has never really stumbled in its existence - but its fans have.

The only way for Quake to die is through attitudes like this. The only way for Quake to die is for us to murder it.
