and I just got DSL, and I'm part of the whole "open source will make the world better" thing, and my GPL-Linux-Gentoo geek friends do it, so I will probably look into it.... after I finish my emerge system and revdep-rebuild stuff, that is.

One shouldn't think too much, even if only a few rich people will be saved in our century, it might help others at some point.

There are things you can do, settings you can adjust on your system to speed it up, such as increasing your Vcache etc. There are programs that will do it for you automatically:

                http://www.pgware.com/

This is a very nice, competent company. I dont' have a license for this system though. I'll have to buy another one.

A programmer who originally wrote a non networked Folding@Home program called Folderol and now works for Nvidia has done work on a simulation code for F@H and someone else working with him wrote a gfx front end for it for use with Geforce 8xxx cards.

Here's the version he worked on:

ATI version which he had nothing to do with:

I'm waiting for permission to link the pic.

Reading up on some F@H info it appears that Stanford.edu has been focusing on ATI cards in their quest to use GPU power for calculations since they claim the ATI cards whoop the snot outta their Nvidia counterparts for horsepower.

Which GPUs will be supported? We have not made any final decisions on this issue. However, our software will likely require the very latest GPUs from ATI (especially now that the newest ATI GPUs support 32 bit floating point operations). Previous work of ours used NVIDIA GPUs as well, but we have now concentrated on ATI GPU's as they allow for significant performance increases for FAH over NVIDIA's GPU's (at least at the current generation). Our GPU cluster has 25 1900XT's and 25 1900 XTX's. We find a considerable performance increase of 1900XT's even over 1800XT's, due to the architectural differences between the R580 and R520 GPU's. Our code will run on R520's, but considerably more slowly than R580. We're very much looking forward to trying out R600's.
The original page is here: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...rformance.html

I cannot tell from that webpage how old that news is because its updates are organized kinda in a weird way. The updates are listed on the bottom and start with the oldest down to the newest instead of the other way around. However I did not see in any of the updates it mentioning Nvidia having caught up with the ATI's in terms of horsepower.

ahem... that was back in the day of Radeon x1k/Geforce 7 series
currently, nvidia cards are faster than ATi. Not trying to be fanboyish or anything.

None of the updates indicate that stanford believe Nvidia has turned it around since then. Also I asked this programmer the same question, had Nvidia turned it around since then. No comment from him whatsoever on the subject. I dunno.

Are you going to run this F@H GUI foq?
