  • Defragmenter not working in xp

so, I just defragmented yesterday and all was well. I deleted a lot of files today and decided to click analyze when I opened Disk Defragmenter and nothing literally happened. I just click the button and it freezes for a second along with defragment. does anyone know what could causing this? I would hate to reformat, the last time I reformatted was only last September or so.

      You should check out DisKeeper

From what I understand it was programmed by disgruntled ex-Microsoft employees. I've used it in the past and its an excellent program, even more so then Windows XP's built in defragmenter Goodluck!

Diskkeeper is one of the best defrag programs on the market, and has been for years. If I remember right, it all started back after the release of windows NT 4 and the NTFS file system started to get popular. Well, one of the big drawbacks to NTFS - it fragments rather badly. That is one reason why I keep my home computers on a FAT32 file system.

NT4 did not have a way to defrag like what windows 98 did. Even though the windows 98 defrag had its problems, it still worked - kinda.

Some developers (seeing a big market with companies starting to use NT4 on a wide scale) got together and launched diskkeeper.

Even after the release of windows 2000 and its built in defrag tool, diskkeeper stayed up with the market and added scheduling and networking tools. A network admin could sit at a server, push the network install of diskeeper out to the work stations and then schedule the defrag to run at a certain time. This worked out a lot better then having to go to "every" workstation and run the defrag tool manually.

before I use diskeeper all the time, I would still like to at least fix the windows defragmentor. the exact message that pops up is "program too big to fit in memory"

Sounds like a virtual memory problem, i could be wrong though.

doesn't matter now! I fixed it in the most crazy way. first I replaced the dfrgntfs.exe with one from my other computer, because I read a forum with someone who had a similar problem. it actually made it worse, it said a commandline was wrong or something. so of course I did system restore and went back in time. then I decided to uninstall Service Pack 3 and that took a while. I try it again and everything is really screwed, so once again. I system restore. now of course I'm getting a bunch of windows updates, because the updater thought it was still service pack 2..but it quickly went away. I try to analyze and defrag. works perfectly. so in conclusion, I never knew the real problem..I just fucked around a bit Lol. again, thanks for introducing me to Diskeeper! I might buy it soon.
