  • Virus! Help! ;(

I cannot play quake anymore! Somehow or another, I took on a pretty bad virus on my computer.... It is called, "freeprodtb". I have tryed Adaware SE, along with many other spyware programs and it finds it, but it cannot delete it. Anyone ever had this problem and know how to fix it? I need some serious help.... I have been all over the internet trying to figure out how to remove it, but have not found out how yet.

    According to this anti-virus site:

    http://www.greatis.com/appdata/d/f/f...xe_Removal.htm

... that virus can be removed by this:

(Viruses suck. Often removing the viruses doesn't necessarily end the problems)

Sometimes running your computer in safe mode, and doing all the virus/spyware/adware scans possible can get rid of it. Safe mode uses minimal drivers and programs, so in case the virus starts when the computer starts, it won't in safe mode.

            Reboot in safe mode.
            Run Ewido.
            Run Spybot SD.
            Run AdAware SE.
Run Stinger or such if you like.
            Run a smart registry clearner.
If it persists and you trust your abilities then use HiJackThis to find suspicious entries on your machine, and also identify any rogue files masquerading as legitimate ones, they are often in windows/system32. A trick to finding them is to sort by the Date, as they are usually under 100k, and came about on the same day within the same hour, and its generally a recent date. Google every file you find, if you can confirm its a threat, drag it into KillBox and tell it to delete on reboot. Rinse and repeat.

Everyone always says run like 50 spyware removal programs and reboot and registry scan and all this other crap all the time. I've got Microsoft Antispyware and AVG Free Virus protection software. Haven't had a virus and only had 2 or 3 spyware progs in my life on my computer and they were bundled with some free software I installed once. Never again have I ever had all this crap on my computer. What do you people do to get all this shit on your PC? Gees, only download pr0n from legitimate sites

Solecord - Those are fine for preventing the entry or spreading of such, but theyre ineffective for truly removing a threat. Microsoft Antispyware is pretty good and we do use it, but it cant be installed in Safe Mode, and when youre trying to clean out a system that keeps repopulating the system (e.g. in one fell swoop in safe mode), if you dont already have it, its useless. AVG works fairly well also, but once again, good early protection but does nothing for anything thats gotten itself deeply in there.

I only suggest running a variety of programs because they use different techniques, are sensitive to different things and basically, when used together kind of cover each others playing fields well.

Though as of late with many infections Ive had to basically do it manually, or even go around Windows and use BartPE to get at the files.

It could also mean that your detection software sucks!:d

I've used all of the programs to detect before. I still have them all on my system, I just only have Microsoft's to scan every night now. The point was, how do you people get all this crap on your PC? Do ya'll download every single program that you can find on the Internet? I personally don't download anything unless I know it's from a trusted source.

Oh and btw, I agree AVG sucks in terms of getting rid of an already active virus in your system but it's worked for me to detect virii in files before they even get installed. That's all I need.

As far as the infection goes... Porn and MySpace (which is just amateur porn). I see it come from those two sites (well one is a type of site...) more than anything else.

I actually have students come to work and complain their computer is broken because it will lock up often when they go to MySpace.

Just curious since you're pretty knowledgable with this stuff, what virus protection software would you recommend for (a) virus removal and (b) virus protection/scanning

I've been hit a couple of times from Lyrics.com Something in the damn banners or something. Now.. I run the same things Sole does and haven't had a problem. But then.. I run and update my antivirus programs and once in awhile use the online one just to make sure the other one isn't pulling my safety chain. ;Þ

I personally have Norton and its Internet Security as I bought it 3 years ago. However my school has a deal that gives free registered McAffee to all students (have to login via school id to get the dl). AVG does a fine job in prevention usually though. I also circumvent such things by running Firefox with Adblock and Flashblock so I have greater control over what is loaded in my browser.

Out of the general scanning for removal programs after an infection, Ewido has had the best results for me and I trust it the most. If things are stubborn it is followed up with Spybot SD, CWShredder, AdAware and so on. However more and more the infections Ive come across on peoples machines cannot be remedied by any one program and in fact all they seem to do is cut off a few limbs. Thus begins the arduous task of examining everything in system32 and combing through the registry... At this point Im glad for HiJackThis and KillBox.

Of course theres a lot of good programs to prevent infection, and 99% of that is just having basic internet sense, the majority of the time. However people love their Secret Smileys, CometCursors, and Weatherbugs...
