  • Any of you guys play these?

Do any of you play ValvE's: Deathmatch Classic? Or Painkiller?
Cause both of them are sorta like sequels to Quake

I play PK; I want to try out DMC too

  • #2
I used to play painkiller which was always fun. However. for me at least it didn't quite have the spark of Painkeep but it had some good ideas and the mod was done reasonably well IMHO.

forgive my newbieness, but I'm guessing by DMC you mean that halflife update with new weapon models, reskinned maps, etc? I heard about it but never got around to actually trying it out. Any screenshots, etc?

    Kind regards

I played Painkiller at a friends for a few hours some time ago and it was definitely fun (but nothing that made me want to buy it or play it again). It had some cool weapons and I remember shooting bitches on broomsticks.

But it also was a very simple game with a console feeling, at least the SP part. I never tried MP.

I have DMC and played it alot. What can i say its all FFA and there is a mod that has hook and power ups (quad pent and invisibility) kinda spread out all over the map like runes. The game play is slow kinda like HL speed. If its under 5$ its worth it.

            NetQuake is deathmatch classic.

Everything forward including Quakeworld managed to screw it up either by accident, for "balance" or to make it "fair" and "balanced" . I possibly exempt Painkiller from this, since I never played that game and have always heard people speak well of it.

Blimey, I don't remember that . It's probably me, but I seem to recall the Painkiller mod being a Quake 2 mod that had things like proximity mines that sent out green laser beems which when tripped would detonate the bomb and a grap hook. Almost as though it was a development of the Quake 1 mod Painkeep that [hopefully] will one dy form part of the universal server.

If you want to know more about PK; the company is really generous, I mean they gave out 3 SP demos and a MP demo too, practically 1/4 of the game, like what id did for Quake.
No company does that these days, espcially Ubisoft.

For DMC - ValvE tried being decently faithful to Quake MP. Pics, info and stuff.

Kancel: yeah the newest PK shoulda been a free update

Baker: PK's a good game, you should grab all four demos and try it out (on their site)

(I've had Quake for many years but I'm an SP guy; I've only gone online twice, using Winquake)
I found this kinda funny - from http://www.quakeworld.nu/blogs/560/133/

We all know what QuakeWorld Today is: ezQuake, QTV, tourneys, div0-skills, new players and such - things I call progress. How about NetQuake?

Yes, NetQuake. Regular Quake, not QW. The thing you got out of the box in 1996, played online. I used to be a NetQuake player until 2004. It was fun, but frustrating after a while (no movement prediction sucks ass). I knew there was such a thing as QuakeWorld, but the reason I never tried it until 2003 is simple: I thought it sucked. There was even a command called 'qwsucks' in crmod (the then KTeams Pro equivalent). So how come I play QW for 4 years now? I got bored of the usual shitacting, aimbotting and lack of competitons. No progress in short. When I first tried ZQuake it felt really good, in fact I enjoyed it more than NQ, even for the first time. I didn't admit it though. So I continued playing NQ and a some QW, and little by little the latter took over. I stopped NQ completely. Big games, tourneys, many hungarian servers, skill, a great community and bunnyhopping were the things I loved the most. It was great. I also tried to convince others to join. My efforts remained futile.

                4 years later...

I just had a brief visit to NetQuake. It hasn't got something you'd call a community. Only a couple of people playing FFA. It is hard to say what the worst thing is. I think it is a close-run contest between, people having misbeliefs about QW, the same shitacting players still around and two good players wasting their time with NQ. I took my time asking people about QW, here are the results:

                I don't like qw
                NEXT!

                only spam
                Huh?

physics, the aim, and the lagg
Physics? QW has great physics, and the movement is just awesome. Aim? I felt a great increase in my LG skills after NQ. Lag? For the first time in years I was not lagging. It was a great feeling, as though breathing properly for the first time.

you lack alot of sounds... like.. you cant hear someone take mega from gl... you can in nq
                That statement is just ridiculous.

that weird lagg, you aint where you are
You know where you are in QW, I assure you.

i rather have 150 nq lagg then qw
Are you sure? 150 in NQ is nasty.

and its hard to stop... if you stop walking, you continue a bit
Wrong. That's NQ over ping 30.

My point is that you should all start playing QW. That is the thing meant for Quake 1 online. It's a fact. I still play regular quake for single player, but that's it. QuakeWorld has more players, much more skill and a great community. Apart from map knowledge, some fun and new friends, I consider my NQ years a waste of time. It lacks skill and progress. QW has it!

A hungarian QW player once told me this:
Bent, just come over to QW. I also played NetQuake, and look at me now!

Painkiller is a lot like QW, Baker would hate it just because.

I agree that lag in NetQuake is no fun if you have bad ping. It is a major weakness of NetQuake.

But you aren't in the USA, so you don't really know the diversity of the stuff there is to play -- and to some extent --- the complete lack of QW to play.

I get very low ping to almost all of the USA servers, which is rather typical in the USA really. I get 30 ping to many of them, 50-60 to almost all of the ones in the USA.

I've played plenty of Quakeworld in the past, I always think of how much better NetQuake is when playing Quakeworld.

Again, I wouldn't want to play with 150 ping, but the European NetQuake guys know I occasionally do play over there and I enjoy it too. But I do get a smooth 150 ping and used to be a dialup player once upon a time and occasionally like that challenge.

And yes, ZQuake is a amazing client.

I don't think NetQuake is better is from a lack of experience, I think NetQuake is better because I have played both countless times.

                      @Ranger pt. 2

In my above post I do understand what you are saying as a perspective from someone in Hungary. 150 ping in NetQuake and I would assume packet loss would be miserable. I would NOT want to play NetQuake under those circumstances.

But I'm in the USA. I have AT&T DSL and sit straight on the super-pipeline going from Columbus to Chicago, Columbus to Saint Louis, Columbus to Dallas, Columbus to Atlanta.

If live close to a major city in the USA, you get solid ping everywhere.

The major USA NetQuake servers, not surprisingly, are in Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Atlanta.

The NetQuake situation in the United States simply doesn't compare to the European scenario at all.

And in the USA, we have a lot more going on than vanilla deathmatch. We've got Clan Arena X, Rocket Arena, RuneQuake, CTF, Coop.

Quakeworld has nothing interesting going on in the USA at all. And if you have 30-50 ping virtually everywhere, what do you need Quakeworld for? Well, in the USA you really don't need anything Quakeworld has to offer in most cases.

Quakeworld players particularly in Europe do not know the satisfaction of playing some of the above mods. Particularly, at least to me, well ... I like all of them except CTF. But Clan Arena X is something unparelled in a meaningful way in Quakeworld. Even a QW version clone would be goofy, compared to the cat and mouse action that happens in CAx.

I'm sorry, you mistake me; I simply came across that article/quakeworld.nu thing. (Really I got no idea who any of those guys are - or anyone in the Quake community to be honest) Cause' I live in NY state and only play SP (on skill 3)

Regarding PK - it's a good game: rockin' music, ugly beasts to frag, fast paced, gibs, gun combos, bunnyhopping and stuff like that. I'm sure you'll like it. (Even if the MP doesn't catch your eye)

No need to apologize, the Quakeworld guys drink some really weird Kool-Aid. They have for years. It isn't new.

Most people that know any better just ignore it. It's like listening to a vegetarian. I'm sorry, but NetQuake is made of real meat. It's phat and juicy, skilled and fulfilling to the core.

No amount of parslay or sprinkles will make Quakeworld more like NetQuake -- NetQuake is the real deal. I know it, you know it, everyone knows it.

(That posty thing you quoted @ Quakeworld.nu was probably someone who got raped by Polarite or C++. Polarite plays both Quakeworld and NetQuake and has several times destroyed me with 150 ping ... Polarite is that skilled. I've seen Polarite destroy 5 players simultaneously Elite American players get destroyed by Polarite on American NetQuake servers while Polarite is playing from Belgium. It's sad.

So that second rate QW player ran to the Quakeworld.nu message boards to whine about how NetQuake sucks to explain his fail ... no one that matters was fooled. Notice he didn't brag about winning ...)

Haha! This was put in such a great manner that I couldn't breathe for about 15 seconds, thx.

As for PK. Original from 2004 was great fun. Yes, nice weapons, raw approach and nice levels, especially some of those levels had super atmosphere thx to the architecture. If for nothing else, than to see some of the levels of PK and it's datadisks is worth it.
The latest PK incarnation is a joke though, bad one. I can understand how 'upset' one of the users here must have been paying for it..

It was a steam impulse buy. I could afford to waste the money, but it still was a slap in face considering it was alpha quality at retail.
