  • Curing cancer, AIDS and the like...

Have you ever lost a loved one to (or been diagnosed yourself with) cancer? AIDS? Do you or anyone you know have muscular distrophy? Maybe you can make a difference.

There is a distributed computing project called World Community Grid (WCG), which is a smattering of all kinds of projects that work to cure the ailments I listed above, and it also does much more. The program runs on your computer, eating up idle CPU time that would otherwise be wasted. Most machines run in this idle state most of thier life, under very basic load imposed by things such as a web browser, media player and so on. There is still a lot of grunt that sits unused. WCG uses resources when nothing else is using them. The program runs on a low priority, so anything else you do comes first, including playing a game, running your web browser and so on, so there's virtually no impact on performance.

If you would like to give running this program, and helping make one step closer to the cure for cancer, AIDS and other things, here's what you need to do:

    1. Download the program here. You will need to log in to do this. The username is Quakeone, and the password is quakeone (Yes, capital Q in the username, lowercase in the password).

    2. Install the program. You might want to click on the Advanced button when you get to the "BOINC Configuration" screen to un-tick the "Use BOINC Screensaver" box.

    3. Once you've got the program running, you'll need to attatch to a project. Scroll down the list and select World Community Grid. Again, the username is Quakeone, and the password is quakeone.

    4. You're all set. Click finish. It will take some time to download the work units, but after a few seconds you should be running.

    5. (optional) You can go to the preferences, and set how much cpu TIME (it won't be a constant load precentage, it will spike up and down) the program will use, how much disk space you want to make available to it, the time of day it uses the internet, the time of day the program will run (again, it's a low priority task, so everything else will get resources first), whether or not to run while on battery, and set it up so that the program only runs after the computer's been idle for a defined amount of time (I assume it works based on mouse movement).

To me this sounds, like your advertising, for a pal under false pre-tenses to make the unwitting home user, part of your "pal or conjoined" bot-network so you can use their internet anonymously, for miscellaneous acts against other computers or corporations.

      ...evil man you.

If its not the above for mentioned, I'd still not do it.

Donate if your rich enough to let someone hog your bandwidth.

      ~Cheers.

Yay, let's use our spare computing power to look for aliens whilst people die from cancer every day, right here on our own planet.

Damn, you got me. Yeah, it's all part of a gigantic pyramid scheme to create a bittorrent network that people will use to distribute child porn all across the globe.

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is a non-commercial middleware system for volunteer and grid computing. It was originally developed to support the SETI@home project before it became useful as a platform for other distributed applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world.
Well, your World Community Grid only even exist's due to SETI@HOME.

So shut your fuck up and show some obvious gratitude you can even be apart of your chosen projects for unused cpu/gpu cycles, for SETI@HOME pioneer'd this shit. Snot nosed lil punk ass,,,

I think my PC's time is spent wisely, whether the fucking thing is watching PRON,looking for ET, or spanking non-quaking newb's like you, G

Nope. The world doesn't work that way.

You don't stop everything to solve the problems on Earth before looking beyond. You do both at once, as the problems on Earth will never be solved.

Why did we go to the Moon before curing cancer?

At the same time, I view SETI @ Home as a waste. There are only 2 options:

              1. The aliens are visiting us right now.
              2. There are no aliens. (At least in our galaxy)

Both of these possibilities are equally disturbing.

Aliens visiting us right now view us as primates, uninterested in us in the form of a true discussion because we are primitive ape-people.

And the idea of no aliens in the galaxy is equally disturbing. It means mature and long-lived life is not abundant on other worlds. Which is scary in so many ways including the idea that Earth-like planets are rare and as a result we can't easily leave to adjacent solar systems.

So our options are: we are so primitive that aliens don't want to talk to us or that the galaxy is so life-adverse that there are no aliens.

I guess option #3 is that there is life in the galaxy but it takes way too long to travel between stars AND scant reason to do so, which is also crappy meaning that an economic faster-than-light travel method doesn't clearly exist or that there is no economical "slower-than-light" reason for aliens to travel around.

              Does anyone like these options?
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Pretty close to my own thoughts on ET life. I think it's foolish to assume that there is no life out there aside from us, what with the vastness of the universe and there being as many galaxies in the universe as there are stars in the sky. You were talking about our own galaxy though... still, there's a massive amount of stars in our own galaxy, who's to say that there's no planets with life orbiting them?

I really don't care if there are aliens here or not. If they are here, they havn't done much to mess with us. If they're not, they either don't exist, or they don't care (most likely).

                      not bandwidth, cycles you dolt.
(while admittedly bandwidth would be used as well)

and if you had read that you would see it said anything you are doing takes priority...that's in no way hogging it.

The idea isn't to hog your bandwidth, its based on the idea that most of your cycles are free at any given time, including when you are actually doing shit.

And many people leave their computers on when they aren't even around, so extrapolate.
