Do you like where the world is headed?

    Post, comment, share ...

My answer ... I think we are living in unusual and exceptionally eventful times. Times so extraordinary that no one is untouched or unmoved by them.

The world economy sucks, we all face difficult choices, the world is changing (Egypt, Libya, the US, Europe, China, etc.). Technology and communication continue to evolve in head-spinning fashion. In the USA, several states are being forced to make difficult budget cuts facing multi-billion $$$ deficits ... I mean Texas is trying to fill a $25 billion gap. College students are facing a crappy job market.

At times it can seem like the world is going to hell in a handbasket ... yet, at the same time, you see people who at first reluctantly rise to challenge and grow.

They are strange times. Times of uncertainty. But if you believe in the human spirit, people adapt and grow.

I think we might be living in possibly the most contentious times in the history of the world. But I personally believe humans adapt and grow to meet the challenges ... far better than an extend period of fat, lazy, easy times.

    Your thoughts?

I vote yes. I remember the 70s and 80s and believe me it was pretty grim. Iran and Iraq, the Cold War, bad cop shows on TV, martial law in Poland, Chernobyl, the Falklands War, no internet (and no global information sharing), disco and hair metal, Northern Ireland, the colour brown, Reagan and Thatcher, coal miners and what happened in the North of England, GW-BASIC, AIDS, threat of nuclear annihilation, the list could go on. Unless you were there you really can't have any true appreciation of how good we have it today.

Since the Berlin Wall fell the world has definitely been on a general upwards trend. True there has been the odd glitch, but I believe that's normal and OK.

The good thing about bad stuff happening is that it's an opportunity for something positive to come out of it. What's happening in Japan right now will give a chance to reassess how we use nuclear power, and lessons can be learned. What's happening in the Middle East was long overdue and is fascinating; I've been there 3 times and have loved every moment of it, and I'm really interested in seeing how that one pans out.

So bring on tomorrow for sure!

None of this is new. The world constantly changes. As for the budget cuts, thank the people pushing socialist agendas which impose big government, big control, less freedom, and more taxes. I think they're called Democrats (not implying Republicans are any less crooked, but in a way less shitty than Democrats).

There are disasters all over the place all the time, both on the personal scale and on the global scale. Humans are inherently incompatible with one another; this is why we have wars rather than harmony.

We're no more contentious than anyone else in the past. The only difference is we have better technology to blow eachother up with. We're re-living the same basic patterns everyone else before us lived through, just slightly more evolved than the last bunch in the way of technology.

You know, logically I believed the Middle East was headed for this eventually but I didn't in my heart actually believe it would ever happen.

You are certainly Mindzy's woman. The first time I ever encountered Mindzy he was in a tirade like a king-shit loose cannon. And I said to myself, "Yea that's fucking awesome. Who is this guy and I want to know more about him "

Ah, I think it is new. Much of Europe and the United States have had an extended 50 year period of extreme wealth.

Wealth makes you lazy in the brain, unmotivated and you become your lesser self because you say "Why bother to plan?"

But failure to plan is planning to fail.

And then you have people in Greece or Ireland or Wisconsin or General Motors really upset when finally the collection agency is after their asses for unpaid bills, but those people didn't raise a fuss in outrage when the bills got paid off the government credit card. It is hypocrisy.

You have to own the future, take control, guide it, adapt. Not sit there passively and cry in your oatmeal when the day finally comes you have to pay the piper.

"College students are facing a crappy job market."

I chose the 'no' option because of this. I'm just about to graduate and already am hearing that finding a job is becoming increasingly difficult. I'm already going through enough as it is with my dad's death, this economy being terrible and the job market is just making life that much worse.

But that's only for me. On a global scale, I wouldn't know. Maybe I'm wrong and things will be better. I just have a hell of a lot of fear of the unknown future.

The *only* fear is fear of the unknown.

Once you conquer that fear --- it is not an easy one to conquer --- you realize that if you can adapt to that challenge, you have no fears at all.

[I'm not even going to pretend conquering the fear of the unknown is easy. It can be an absolutely miserable and lifeforce sucking experience. If you do conquer it, it comes from one day simply deciding you can take whatever punishment and adversity life gives out with a smile and ask for more. Not because you want things to be that way, but because you realize there are only 2 types of people and you do get to decide which group you will be in. Once you truly acknowledge to yourself in good faith that life was not meant to be easy or meet your expectations, you change -- and you'll realize that your greatest enemy and strongest ally is yourself: you can either let fear stand in your own way and defeat yourself, or roll up your sleeves and say "I'll play with whatever deck of cards life deals."]

FYI, we have always been a socialist society. Your police, fire-departments, highways, etc. are funded by socialist programs, so nothing new there really. I do not agrre with the assessment that we are incompatible with others. This is an attitude and must be overcome in the new world we find ourselves in now. WE are in unique times and must use the technology you speak of to improve the world not destroy it. Yes, unfortunately we are quite slow in making that a reality, but I remain optimistic we have the abilities to rise above in spite of the stupidity we seem to be displaying. I'm hoping its part of growing pains and that the resistance to change and the violence are the dying gasps of old ways that have to change.

Crap like tsunami's and earthquakes happen all the time, they're just more aware because we now have more media (MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.), and a plus is the 2012 theory.

Agreed. it's that fear of the unknown that keeps everyone fighting, and help fuel intolerance.
