  • Ideas you have, but not the skills to do it

    Figured this would be a nice thread to have. Many of us have some nice ideas or just something we'd like to see or always wanted to do ourselves but lack to skills to do it.
    I myself, I have basic map ideas - but you get me to open a map editor and I am instantly lost.
    Give me a model idea, there's a decent chance I could do it (as long as it's not a living creature as my skills on making those are still weak).

    So lets share ideas, maybe someone here who has the skills may like it and do it.

    One thing I've always wanted to see was a Quake 1 themed DM17 - The Longest Yard.
    The map has been ported and works great. Sadly it looks like Q3 with Q1 weapons - it's out of place in design.

    So my idea I've had for a long time was to simply change the design of the jump pads, launch pads and remove the "void".

    -Instead of the jumppads - they'd look more like the wind tunnels from that map. Simple to do, it'd just look different. So that middle platform would look like the wind tunnels. You'd never fall into the holes due to the wind coming out.
    -The launch pads just need a reskin or a new design. I was more or less thinking the fading red glow that's on the side of the the teleporters on the start map. Another idea would be to make them tunnels themselves. This would be the better idea as it'd keep the theme of the whole "wind tunnels" concept.
    -The launch pad that sends you up to the Quad Damage - same concept as the center jumppads - it's a wind tunnel you cannot enter. However instead of it floating - it'd instead have a tube that goes all the way down. So it's possible a player can hit it and fall into....
    -"Void replacement". Instead of a massive long fall to your death. The map is instead floating on lava. If you fall in - you're dead. However it's not that far off from the edge of the level. It's maybe 2 feet from the floor.
    -"black walls" - as the lava would have to look like it's contained. Just a castle wall would work. It'd look bland if it was basically 4 square walls. So some missing blocks here and there. Basically just looks like a beat up stone wall that has a suiting red skybox.
    -"Teleporters" - Instead of the Q3's circular design - it's the DM3 style ones. The rectangle starry block.
    -"Weapons/Items" - generally all ports have the ideal weapon set. Shotgun where it was in Q3, RL where the RL was and in place of the Railgun is the Lightning Gun. All other pickups (armor and all) get replaced with the Q1 equal. Obviously armor shards will be removed.

      and on the coop server instead of a flat square that you walk across to find the map teleports, maybe make it a cube instead to where it rotates and extra maps are on the other parts of the cube. just some thoughts.

          I have the same Idea as Mark but I would like a diving board please.
          No upsidedown bizzaro world junk tho, just swap the lava for water and add jump pads.
          Hell screw the water make all jump pads.

            For programmers: A new/better use for the axe could be a good idea, or special powers given by the runes (recharging when killing enemies), maybe...

              Water must be as deep as outside on dm3 is tall. plz, THX.


              Maybe a hollowed out turd to crawl up inside and camp.

                I have an idea for a map,I however don't have any mapping (map making) skills.

                So, if there's a mapper who's not busy?? or needing an idea, etc. Please let me know..

                          That map is almost perfect to what I was seeking. Changing of the textures and making slime into Lava and it's basically ready.

                            I'm sure I've droned on about this in another thread but I'd like to see more synergy between mods and have the best weapon sets from the better mods as voteable options on a server. So for example I would like to have a plain FFA server and players could "vote-painkeep" and have beartraps, Autosentries, Gravity wells, CLG, etc . To mix it up even further players could then "vote-dmp" to add the Deathmatch plus weapons (Tripwires, teleporters, homing rocks, RTB's, Superweapons, bfg9000, etc, etc) as well. Add this to "vote-runequakeplus", and you've got a fun action packed starting point.

                            I know Baker aluded to working on something very similar to this within his Universal Server project but unfortunately it's gone a little quiet on this front most likely due to all his other coding projects hogging his time (poor guy).

                            I was grateful to receive some helpful advice from R00k on how to do this a week or 2 back, so with a bit of luck and when time permits I might be able to work my way through this.

                            I appreciate that this could be viewed by the purists as being a bit "gimmicky" but personally I tend to take the view that from time to time the variety of play and new challenges this would provide on servers can only serve to provide an interesting alternative experience and keep quake interesting.

                              Voice command driven computer that automatically does commands, like Star Trek.

                              Just in the case of, say, engine coding ... you can have a simple idea that takes 2 hours of messing around to make it work.

                              Or graphics ... you have a simple object in your head you could easily describe, but to turn it into a model would take 3 hours.

                              There is a rather high amount of inefficiency from getting something out of your head and into reality, even when it is simple and the tools are available.

                              The world is getting incrementally better with things like Google, YouTube, Wikipedia and Google maps really making the ability to quickly get to information really fast.

                              Still, there are unnecessary bottlenecks particularly in doing something even so simple as, say, a Power Point presentation or converting files from one format to another or a comparison of 2 lists showing mutually exclusive members, shared members and such.
