Give the US Congress a problem we'll call "X".

They will come up with solution "Y" that does not solve problem "X" and causes problems Z1 through Z99999.

I've read that SOPA is stalled. But if SOPA passes, you'd think any site would be very vulnerable to being shutdown.

You could probably cause a site problems just by complaining about member avatars violating someone's rights or a freaking button image or a screen shot. Maybe even a text signature that was a quote. Or if someone even posted a link to something.

I'm no fan of piracy, but SOPA would not do a damn thing to stop piracy except in limited cases where a foreign site is selling counterfeit goods for market inside the USA and even that could be dubious.

And say goodbye to YouTube, Google and Wikipedia. Probably sites like Flickr or other photo sharing sites. Etc. Etc.

Yup, bunch politics. Just like the bill "Nobama" signed on christmas day 2011. Indefinite Detention of "AMERICANS" Want liberties and rights restored? Vote Ron Paul. He's the only candidate who will fight for our right's regardless if anything get's passed through congress. I own a business, and the way thing's are going, i could be in trouble in the next few years if this crap keeps up!

I myself am no fan of piracy either, though I don't think the internet should be reinvented but better yet, the close minded people of the world who want things censored should be educated.

The internet is a reflection of our physical freedom.

          Why so censored?

If its going to happen, it will happen.

I heard a good 5 years ago that they was planning to rebuild the internet infrastructure.

However, it's a tedious task, and even now, that policy technically isn't rebuilding the infrastructure its just adding more barriers and giving ISPs the work, to monitor everything transferred and recieved more thoroughly.

I think as a result, there will be a ton more lawsuits of piracy. An courts will be way, way backed up that people that commit murder, theft and rape, will have to wait in holding cells while half the population around the world is tied up in court over downloading some artists mp3 via a website or torrent.

            LoL.

It will be chaos, that and all of what everyone else said about wiki/youtube etc being taken down will likely happen as well.

Makes me wonder if 90% of the porn sites out there will go down as well for hosting cinematic pornographies that have copywrites, to the actual publisher, yet are being posted on third party sites...

The internet may become like the desert with the tumbleweeds, rolling around...

            lol.

I hope the European Union will stop this madness. Then Americans will need illegal satellite links just like the people in Egypt did when theirs was shut down.

The irony here is that it is not "lolgov" damning you to this, but your beloved corporations with their capitalist profit interests are behind this bill.

                  Free market ftw? :-/

as true as that is, the free market is still the winner. everything has a way of balancing out in the free market, that's why it works. give it time.

being a libertarian, i like ron paul, but he'll never win. the answer to your proposition is small government, not one person. the president can only do what congress allows him to do. whatever political party is for small government, is what we should want.

I always thought SOPA was dumb to begin with. Even if it is passed - will it actually stop it? Not at all. We will find a way around it.

Personally what they should be focusing on more is the actual harm that comes to people due to their internet usage.
Child exploitation (pictures/videos/sexual predators preying on the underage)
                        Hacking (like getting banking info)
Scams (don't need to explain - common knowledge)

They should be focusing on these things, especially the first. Here in Canada the number of child porn offenders is on the rise. 2 this year in the quite province of Saskatchewan (that I know of) - one of the guys I knew personally and never expected it.

Piracy does make them lose money yes - however it won't stop it at all. Hell it'd actually increase the black market sales of burning software/audio/video and selling it.

What they are doing though is trying to control the internet - and are using piracy and IP as a coverup for the reason of it to pass.

Its all about copyright infringement....goes as far back as napster, remember?
Theres an old saying: " Any publicity is good publicity" - and I tend to agree its a 50-50 shot. The people who use something that is copyrighted in their work, weather knowingly or not, can reap serious benefit to the ' artist ' who originally composed the work....also, it can cause serious trouble if that work is being used in a prohibitive way from the original artist. You would be surprised that in many cases, if you are able to ask the artist first, and explain what you are going to do, many of them will grant permission for it to be used, because most the time the useage is parallel with their original intent. How many artists have either knowingly or unknowingly used other artists ideas, and asked their permission....thats rare you hear of such a thing at all. Actualy when it comes to music, the scientific definition is that sound is the movement of air. Who owns exclusive rights to the air? Smokers?

Yea, I think so....he definately has the right diagnosis on the sources of the problems, but diagnosis is one thing, and the next task would be actually putting the repairs into motion, and right now, this culture is bankrupt , monetarily , spiritually and physically. Decades ago we could diagnose problems pretty good, and had enough manpower to steer the ship, but not anymore. He may be able to do some decent damage control if elected though, but it would have to be 2 terms to even make a dent in this disaster, and the next one who took office would have to carry on in the same fashion for another 2 terms at least...thats pretty much asking the impossible though.
