Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I think at first, since their goal was reproduce the results of Windows API calls so they used the word emulator, maybe incorrectly. Then other Windows Emulators for Linux came on the scene, so they changed the acronym to put emphasis on the fact it isn't really an emulator so it runs fast.
Or something.
Hell if I know ...

WINE makes it look to applications as if Windows API functions were present on the host machine. Then it does translation between the application and the underlying (Linux etc) OS.
Sometimes this works well, sometimes it doesn't. Wine is popular because it doesn't require an actual Windows install. Here is the database of applications that run under Wine, and how well they run.
WineHQ - Wine Application Database
It does however not create a full Windows environment on the Unix host. There is no functioning Windows desktop or explorer or anything. It just makes your application run (or not).
A virtual machine (Virtualbox etc) actually runs Windows itself (you have to install Windows in the virtual machine, ie you need an actual copy of Windows). This gives you a fully working Windows desktop running in a window under Linux, MacOSX etc. The virtualized Windows uses part of the computer's hardware (your RAM etc. is divided between the guest and the host system) and for all intents and purposes Windows will behave as if it runs on a real computer (because Virtualbox emulates some generic hardware and exposes this to the guest system).
Virtual machines work both ways - you can run Linux in a virtual machine under Windows, too.

Neither is an emulator, if my understanding is correct, although certain things are being "emulated", but Wine looks and feels a little like an emulator, hence the word-play I guess.

What is this thread? Grim Warlock's Two Minutes Hate? Felt negative, angsty and belligerent lately? I suggest that there are many more important things in life than getting yourself into a state (or trying to get others into a state) over a new version of Windows. Howabout trying to say nice things about stuff you like instead? Give it a try!IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/
