I wouldn't fear that. Technology moves forward. Precision and speed has value.

That being said, a laptop touchpad is a mousepad where your finger is the mouse and a touchscreen is the same idea.

They will come up with something that allows the precision and speed of a mouse eventually, some lines of work simply cannot live without that kind of precision and speed.

I really can't invision a world without the point-and-click interface. They really can use a dose of "If it isn't broken" mentality.

I forsee the lines between Console and PC being blurred long before the lines between cellphone and PC, the whole idea of touching my monitor for my interface is just repugnant.

Next time you are in some generic store, walk in the computer aisle.

        Look at the selection. Leave.

Then mentally recall how many desktops you saw on display in that aisle.

Then when the answer is zero, consider how many of those people are going to bother to buy a mouse.

I don't like change either, but in some ways this is "not good" from an FPS on the PC point-of-view.

        In the short term ...

I can't imagine using Radiant or Blender without keyboard shortcuts and the mouse.

Both tools require working for extended periods at a computer, during which you will want to sit down. A mouse is simply much more ergonomical in such a situation than having to raise your arm every time you want to click or drag something on the screen. Boy, the muscles you will get on your right arm. And the pain.

SMS kids are going to love this new interface, and people who use their PC for light internet browsing will get used to it. Even in some workplaces this will come in handy, such as in warehouses, on cranes, in barber shops and hairdressers'. Not to mention space ships.

But people who do heavy duty work over hours and hours with very complex specialised software that requires an excessive amount of inputs? Hmm.

I'll look at this when people can use 3dsMax ergonomically with it over a workday of 14 hours at the same level of productivity.

Or when it's used in e-sports and games.

Nah, there is something better for such jobs - so-called 3D-mouse. Quite expensive thing, but it really increases the productivity of work. Donna'bout Blender, but it helps a lot in Autocad, Invertor or SolidWorks.

Mom and Dad don't buy little Timmy a desktop for his schoolwork. Or send him off to college with a desktop.

Timmy might not have a mouse and might not care. He might try an FPS online and realize he cannot compete, so instead he plays something else that a touchpad can play well.

I think about this kind of issue. It does present a problem.

It is not for the Quake, it is not even for everyday usage. But it perfectly fits the needs of 3D-designers.
PS spacenavigator actually sucks - you'll spent yar money down the drain on it. SpaceMouse or SpacePilot are more much better, despite its cost even.

Unfortunately, retail places not having gaming-oriented desktops or even the right peripherals is no recent affair. It's been like this for a long time where only specialized stores, and the internet, are the only way to get what you actually need (or want).

I almost wish Microsoft actually followed up on the whole "Demo PCs in stores to play games" and "accessible PC gaming" mentality they were advertising before vista came out. When It didn't do well they just completely ditched that.

I don't remember what it was called or where I saw it, I also don't have the time to find it, but I saw a video like 7 or 8 months ago where a guy was using his brain patterns to control the cursor.

All he had on was a semi-bulky headband that went to his temples. You can forget about touching the screen or even a mouse for that matter. The technology is already there to think your "mouse" controls.

There are two things I can imagine to substitute for a mouse in the 3D designer scenario.

                              1. A large touchpad or graphics tablet that doubles as one. Does the same as a touchscreen, but lies flat on the table. Alternatively a large tablet computer that also lies (almost) flat on the table to avoid the lifting-your-arm routine.

                              2. Brainwaves. But I'm not sure how well this works after 14 hours of work when you're tired and can't concentrate well.
