  • Wireless Routers

My Linksys router died last week. Went to Walmart last night after getting tired of using an ethernet cable to internet.

I hadn't looked at the prices of wireless routers in a while. Nice to see they are about half what they used to be.

I saw this one for $34 in the store.

    Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G 54Mbps Broadband Router - Walmart.com

Of course, when I get to the counter it rang up as $39.99.

Me: Uh, it said $34 on the display.
Girl ringing up the item: The price is scanning as $39.99
Me: I got that one because it was $34.

[The fact there were 8 people in line behind me made me know this would quickly get resolved. And 2 seconds later she overrode the price. I hate it when an item rings up for price other than the display. Sheesh.]

Ironically, there was a Belkin one for $29.99 and I thought about it for a second and that went like this "Wait a sec, I've never had a Belkin product actually work right in my entire life. No way! Get the Netgear one."

/Lame story sure ... but that's all I got for stories at the moment.

D-Link WBR-2310 : got it for 19.99 at office depot (I think it was a sale item though). I've had it for 3 years and I have never had a problem. It doesn't broadcast very far (30+ ft). That's fine for me cause I only need it to broadcast about 20.

My linksys is about 8 years old now, still works, but ever so often i have to unpower it to get it to connect.
My ISP gave me a netgear 802.11b/g for free but i cant get into the 192.168.1.1 admin config. When I called them and asked them why the default "admin"/"admin" doesnt work the tech said they purposely set the pw at the bios level in the device so that endusers cant mess with the settings. So unfortunately i dont use that router cause I cant even run a test server through it on my two local machines.

Nice to know that routers are that cheap I havent priced them lately. Might have to get a new one, so my wife can use the wifi, this linksys is only a (b) not a (G)...

I posted a thread a few years ago about routers, ended up buying a D-Link after Rampage's recommendation. Works great, never disconnects, although it still needs a reboot about once a month or else local connections slow to a crawl.

You guys should check out tomato/dd-wrt/openwrt/freewrt. It's router firmware that you can put on compatible routers to replace the stock fiirmware. It's comaptible with a variety of brands and models of routers and will turn your ho-hum router into a *very* capable device.

I deal with cisco, juniper, sonicwall, netopia, and a few other business class routers and switches on a daily basis, and find that consumer routers are simply not up to snuff. Put DD-WRT or Tomato on them, and viola, every configuration you could possibly need. Give it a shot. There is a possibility of bricking your router if you attempt this, though I've yet to have this happen.

Also, R00k, most of the major ISP's AT&T, Verizon, SWBELL and others usually set the serial number as the router password, so you might give that a shot.

Lastly, if you've got money to burn, and are the 'do it yourself', I'd suggest building your own router/switch from scratch. There are many types of boards with custom firmware that you can load. Microtik is one such brand that I would highly recommend. You can find indoor and outdoor enclosures, firmware, and a variety of antennas to fit your needs.
