          Chuck who used to run Widomaker once did a screenshot bragged about how he downloaded 95 MB in 7 seconds. Depends on a lot of factors, but it isn't unheard of.

          In Chuck's case, he was located in Richmond, Virginia (Wash DC) right on one of the main internet backbones.

                      I usually get like 500 kb/s, but a few times where I was closer to the server, I got 700-800 kb/s... It all depends on the server really, I was downloading two things at once at 500 kb/s each, so that means I could do a 1000 kb/s download.

                        it doesnt depend on the server as so much as the hops over any given route to the server

                          I don't know about IE, but Firefox starts downloading when you have the save as window open, so if you take forever to choose where to save the file, it'll probably finish before you hit ok and all that will be left is to copy it to the destination

                            I didn't realize that, but if FireFox does that is some smart design.
