  • House of the dead

I've been playing the mess out of this. It's free and you have to put your cmputer in win 98 compatibility mode.

I had this for the dreamcast (good old early 2000's systems)
I am like a stray dog, lost in between what I do and what I should do.
But sometimes, all you need is Imagination.

Imma make a lil review of this real quick:

I dl'd HOTD1 & 3 as well and my opinion is that this is the best one. HOTD1 took me 20 minutes to completely beat, it is the shortest game I have ever played. I don't know if it was the emulator or the game but the crosshair was in space in relation to where you actually fire. I tried to ignore it and get a feel for the offset but it really ruined the game for me.

HOTD3 had amazing graphics and sets, but they threw out their "surprise! I'm right in your face" style gameplay for presenting every monster from afar. That ruined it for me. It was just:

door opens, monsters come out, kill them (long before they get to you), repeat

It was also just a trial and a very poor one at that. You get about 4 minutes of gameplay.

HOTD2 has it all in my opinion (for its game type). The maps are very attractive and never seem to get repetitive or boring. There seems to be an insane amount of monster types and their attacks range from tackling you to biting/clawing you to throwing things at you and even some kung-fu.

I like how the entire game can be played with just a mouse. If you just want to relax and mindlessly shoot stuff without dealing with a bunch of controls, this is the game for you. However, there is an oversight in their AI. If you just press fire and reload at the same time, you never run out of bullets, which kinda makes the "RELOAD" (lol) useless.

The bosses are really tough. They move around a whole lot and since you can't control your movement, but are bound to the built in camera, trying to get a bead on some of these enemies seems almost impossible.

I think what I like most about the game is how fast it moves by. Everywhere you turn there is something trying to kill you and it's generally not the same thing you just killed.

You can be hit up to 5 times per continue and you get 9 continues, so you can be hit no more than 49 times throughout the entire game if you ever intend to complete it. 49 times sounds like a lot, til you have to fight a boss that will take 12 to 15 of those hits away from you. There are extra lives but they are sparse and hard to come by. Generally you either have to save someone or shoot a barrel that the camera doesn't give you a lot of time to shoot.

I give HOTD2 a 9 out of 10. It probably doesn't deserve a 9, but I have had a lot of fun playing it and my only real complaint is that you never get a different gun.

HOTD1 is also free but you will probably be really disappointed. Here is the entire game explaiined:

            1) fight through lesser monsters
            2) fight a boss
            3) have a conversation with the guy that made the monsters
            4) fight another boss
            5) have one more conversation
            6) destroy a final boss

Yes, you fight some simple enemies and then 3 bosses in a row, game over. There is also infinite continues so it is impossible to NOT beat the game.
