(PS: hope am allowed to post like this)
Unlike other mods, Capture The Flag is quite confusing because there's not one but dozens of different variants of Capture The Flag:
- Allstar (consumate mod of Threewave, ThunderWalker, CTF+, Expert CTF, Midnight CTF and Xeno CTF)
- ClanRing
- Creeper (lots of new runes)
- Expert CTF (just maps? & req. Expert Quake?)
- Hot Potato
- League Of Capture
- Midnight (Quake with no lights, but with flashlight)
- Pure (dozens of options, modes and features all configurable by the server operator)
- ThunderWalker
- ThreeWave
... and more...
So, if one wanted to play Capture The Flag, which version should they use? And to make things worst, some CTF mods are conglomeration of others, etc. or require perquisites of others...
It's around 17 years now and Quake 1 CTF still lives in my memory. I started scouring around the internet trying to find CTF download files (ThunderWalker, ThreeWave, Allstar, etc). As we all know, websites are born and then they die, virtually all CTF websites are long gone. I did use "way back machine" just to take a look at what the CTF websites were like, and get an idea of the last/latest versions. It would be good to create a CTF shrine somewhere, with links to wayback machine of last good valid URLs.
GameSpy/FilePlanet was were I usually get my Quake 1 mod files. After 2010, GameSpy / FilePlanet is shutting down, and hence files are disappearing now. The other place I've found with lots of Quake 1 mods is @ gamers.org (though beware some are not latest versions, eg. Hot Potato, etc.) It's good to know that we can still get Allstar & ThunderWalker. The only download I could not find was ThunderWalker Server 5.0....

I used to visit Captured.com for CTF news & updates back in the late 1990s. Here's a wayback link: Captured.com | Classic Quake Area for some interesting reading.
