A jetpack would be kind of cool for CTF, and might add a "Duke Nukem" touch to it.You know what I'd like to see, a revamped grappling hook. Instead of it reeling you in, you hang off of it. Maybe the jetpack could be an item you pick up, but the flag carrier cant use it - so what you could do, is get the jetpack, and whoever wants to carry the flag will grapple on to your jetpack, and you have to fly him over the flag. Sort of like a teamwork thing.
This would be for a modded CTF though, I don't want no changes to mah stock Threewave.
IF I am look down and jump, I move more drastically forward (Think about how a olympic runner, who is knelt down ready to push off the running blocks! )He doesn't jump straight into the air like a Quake guy would! He leaps forward!! This slight forward momentum could make for an interesting tweak on CTF gameplay....
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GmmAUbfhMU]YouTube - Starting Blocks Lesson - Big Train - BBC comedy[/ame] Ignore the british humor, this is just to help visualize that a "pivotable" (looking up and down" would be freaking awesome!
I kinda understand what Lerster is talking about. Run around (maybe bunny hop if you wanna), then JUMP to Red Armor on Elder. Or fly over lava bridge towards red base. In response, the only way for this to work that keeps the original feel of the hook and satisfy anyone willing to use it would be this:
1> Players have to hold a button down (impulse 22 for compatibility)
during the duration of holding, a speed meter increases, long you hold it the more power your jump. Max power (800) it automatically thrusts you in the air, let off prior and you jump at that level of power.
2.> Gravity.
We aren't butterflies or Tinkerbell, this is Quake.
3.> While in air, holding the <thrust> key again adds torque to air-strafing.
Main differences of this and normal hook would be that it wouldnt require you to switch weapons, and you can not hook someone.

I still wanna try adding the original idea for Quake, and add a super hammer to smack peeps

In observermode when you hold fire down you can float faster around the map and you can steer which way your going.
If this was incorporated to replace hook. *(replacing real game mode with observer mode)* and moding obs mode to being quaketv only/or chaseactive w/e...
Then instead of hooking around the map you'd walk, and super-fly around/up down and capture with the flymode (same speed as that from in observermode when you hold down fire while floating around).
I think it'd be quite fun.
I know every coder and modder is busy atm though so chances are this will become a forgotten idea.
But i still think it'd be neat/fun.
Don't get me wrong i do like hook, but its very hard on my wrist and i imagine this flymode idea would be just as hard on my wrist anyways, as you'd be steering which way your flying.
The alternate to a hook in modern CTF became the bunny-hop, UT made a translocator that shot a disc out that u could teleport to. UT3 has a hover surfboard for a ctf vehicle. The actual skill to the hook is you have to aim where you wanna go, wait for the hook to connect, strafe to compensate for the aim/obstacles, and timing when to let go. Oh and you have to switch your weapon so you are defenseless for a second. On a big map, i dont see why DM players dont like the hook. I mean, ELDER would be fun to DM if there was only 1 or two quads.
Instead of a hook, lets all ride around on dirtbikes!
