  • Chain Map sign up

Sign up if you are interested and more info will be given in the near future.

    Who qualifies to sign up?

Anyone familiar with a Radiant which also possesses the desire to complete an entire room of a map with serious intent.

When enough people have signed up, a vote can be taken on more specific aspects of this project.

    Project Lead: probably golden_boy
    Non-Procrastinator: MadGypsy

This isn't my idea and I didn't even know what a chain map was until yesterday but, I would like to suggest a twist.

A chain map doesn't need a project lead nor QC. It is simply one person starting a map, then sending it to the next person to continue. And so on.

For the first time around, we would use the Quake texture wad and no custom QC.

Each mapper in the chain makes one area - at least one room that needs an entrance and an exit. Rooms may have two entrances or two exits on occasion. Your area does not need to have any lights or monsters (but you are welcome to include that stuff.)

No unusually large scale areas (let's keep it at Quake scale.) And I suggest we keep it simple the first time around - the goal should be to finish something, anything.

New mappers would be cool to have on board, too.

I volunteer to be the last in line; I'll make the map work, seal and compile it.

    So yeah, I'll participate.

Edit: We need at least 4-5 mappers for this to make sense.

I knew a chain map doesn' need qc I just wanted Primal to be a part of it. Isn't half of what you said what a project lead would say?

Don't necessarily need to use Radiant for mapping!

You can use Trenchbroom, BSP, Quark etc as well.

The only thing to be aware of is that some editors might use Valve 220 map format, or that Worldcraft saves its maps in a different format. If people wanted to use different editors, we would need to be able to convert them (I think this is possible, I'll need to look into it.)

join up r00k. My mapping skill level isn't very high and I'm totally going to be a part of this. I only stated that it was radiant specific cause I'm not familiar with the other editors and I was unsure if the .map that other editors generate were the same.

Alternately, I could make you a dump and go stock quake radiant (selected compilers and all) and from there you could 1) figure out most of it in about 10 minutes and 2) ask me anything you can't figure out. I may not be an awesome mapper but I know that editor on a Q1 level, upside down and inside out.

most definitely the most difficult hurdle, getting it off the ground. Someone's gotta hike the ball, I just don't know anything about mapping. Has anyone tried inquiring if the current active mapping community members on an individual basis [if they are interested in participating!]? I don't know many map authors unfortunately I'm out of touch with the custom mapping community. Who knows the crowd?

I'm about to kick this map off. Then I'm going to send it to golden_boy and let him worry about who gets it next.

Mkay. Kick it off then. I'll send it to talisa thereafter, or you could send it directly to her. That makes us 3 mappers already, 4 if rook decides to join in. And wasn't there someone else who wanted to participate?

Post any questions in this thread.

Feel free to make 2 or 3 rooms, too.

@2 or 3 rooms - yeah 1 wouldn't be enough. I was thinking that earlier.

I'D START WORKING ON A ROOM (oops caps)

but i need to see the theme of the map first.

it's probably more fun not to know but just to see 1+2+3+... and go from there.

I'll make a small room if i feel like i'll suck, ie e1m1 start spawn size

whats the time frame per submission?
