  • Shocker: Starbuck's Texture Set

Starbuck released a faithful ID textures replacement set with 300+ textures at the Quake Expo (http://www.quakeexpo.com).

    His booth: http://www.quakeexpo.com/booth.php?id=6

    The Func_Msgboard thread on this:

    http://www.celephais.net/board/view_thread.php?id=47369

Starbuck is a map maker so the textures would be expected to be extremely faithful and according to feedback at Func_Msgboard this is confirmed. I haven't checked it out yet.

Who would guess something as hard as a replacement texture set would appear out of nowhere? The Quake Retexturing Project has been working on textures for ages before completing the set (see the Quake Expo site for the QRP release).

Note: There are more than 300 ID textures so Starbuck's texture set is not 100% complete. I think last time I checked, there were 450-550 ID textures in the standard ID maps.

Quake Retexturing Project stuff never felt like Quake to me. Sorry. I know it's a hard and huge work, but I always preferred the original texes.
Now Starbuck's job is amazing. This is true devotion and faithfulness. What a subtle effect! Looks like original game unblurred!
Unlike QRP ones, you just don't feel the hires/lowres mix. The blend with old texes is not noticeable. Perfect!

Bah. Wheres quake10year textures? I don't see any difference in these except that they are sharper.

Seens to be great. But I still prefer Qrack, original quake textures and DarkPlaces, though.

If you don't recall, I made a thread for "special" people so they know how to delete their own threads/posts. :-/

and just so you know, this is a texture pack. It's not a quake engine. You can use darkplaces or Qrack with this texture pack (most likely)

                Hey there,

Baker, thanks for highlighting my texture pack. It's great to know people are trying it out. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I should point out though, this is *not* a pack that retextures the whole of quake, it only retextures the base maps. And it does all of those textures and more. In future releases I hope to retexture all the mission pack base textures, and whatever custom idbase maps players suggest. So if you've got any suggestions, I'll make a note of them.

                cheers again,
                Jon

                      They'd go c:\quake\id1\textures

To use them, use a supporting engine like FitzQuake, JoeQuake, DarkPlaces, Qrack, etc.

Then load up a base map like E1M1 or DM3.

Cool! I don't think they showed up right because they were a bit blurry, my normal Quake textures are kinda blurry tho, is there a command to tweak texture detail/resolution?

yes there is, try typing picmip 0 at the console... if you have picmip set to anything larger than zero, all your textures will be more and more blurred.

                            Hope that solves it,
