"Are you reading me in there?! I could really use some friggin back up here!" A slipgate soldier clutched his gun firmly and sprung back swiftly as a pair of massive bony hands swung vigorously at him, meaning to take his life. The soldier and his attacker battled fiercely in a dimly lit corridor of a large ziggurat.
"Relian, what is it?" A female voice said on the soldier's comlink.
"Monster! Big!" Relian said firing shot after shot into the monster's bulky body. The monster proceeded to gather what appeared to be static energy between its hands. "Shit...gotta cut communications now."
"Relian, what’s going on? Relian?" Seconds later, the monster discharged its gathered electricity, unleashing all of it directly into Relian's body. He screamed with pain as his legs began to lose strength. The monster rushed over to him and slammed its bony clawed hands into Relian's stomach, sending him flying clear across the room, rendering him unconscious.
"Relian? Relian, come in. Relian!"
Silence...
"Ugh..." Relian slowly opened his eyes. After spending a few seconds in down time to recover a bit of his lost stamina, Relian got to his feet and took a quiet look around. He was brought to an abandoned slipgate complex. The place smelled of gunfire and rot. A massive battle was fought here a few days earlier. It didn't look as though anyone survived. A growl came from a short way away. Relian dropped. He didn't know why he was here, or why he was even alive. He knew, however, that the beasts of Quake were not intelligent ones. They only acted out of survival instinct, or to serve a greater power. He knew that someone was behind this; otherwise the monster would have killed him. His gun was taken from him, so his only hope was a stealthy escape. A shambler was roaming around the base, and no doubt a handful of grunts were guarding the exits. "I need a weapon..." Relian searched around desperately for anything that could be used as a weapon against the deadly minions of Quake. Staying out of the shambler's line of alert, he found an axe in a fire emergency case. He knew, however, if he broke the glass to get the axe, fire alarms would sound, giving him away. He had to abandon the axe for now and search for an alternate option. The shambler was getting closer and closer. It would soon find him if he didn't escape. The situation was becoming drastically desperate. "Something, anything, damnit!" Then, he saw it. A very small glimmer of hope. A dropped, bloody pocket knife, just barely big enough to split a stomach open. He grabbed the knife and sprinted to the shadows of a nearby computer terminal as the shambler rounded the corner. Relian waited until the thing passed, then darted from his hiding place. An exit sign above notified Relian of an exit around the corner. He sprinted for the exit, keeping an eye and an ear out for any other monsters. He saw the exit, then halted dead in his tracks and jumped behind a box. A death knight was on patrol. Relian knew a direct attack would fail. His armor was too badly damaged and his weapon was much too small to contend with the death knight's sword. "...Wait...his sword! If I can get the drop on him, perhaps I can make better use of that sword." He waited until the death knight passed him, then he sprung on the knight, plunging the small knife into the death knight's spine. The knight growled and flung its arms and sword around frantically trying to remove Relian from its back. Relian twisted the knife, waiting for the right moment...then grabbed the death knight's arm that held its blade. He removed his knife from the knight's back and stabbed the knight in the throat. The battle was not over yet. Relian kept twisting and tearing with his knife while keeping firm hold on the knight's arm. Finally, the knight ripped Relian from his back and threw him away. He shrugged off his wounds and approached Relian...but quickly realized he had been disarmed. Relian now wielded his sword. Relian got to his feet and charged the death knight. With one clean swipe, he decapitated his enemy. The death knight's body dropped to the floor. Relian knelt down beside his slain foe and inspected the body. The armor the knight has on was nearly undamaged, save for the small hole in its back. He removed the chest plate from the death knight and donned it as his own. "These things should give me a better shot at getting out of here alive....I hope." He held up his sword in a defensive stance and charged toward the exit. The grunts at the gate were quickly slain. One of them carried a comlink. Relian took it and configured it to his team's channel. "This is Relian. Does anyone read?"
*kshhhhh*"...ian?"*kshhhkshhhhh*"Relian? Is that you?"
"Elisa?
"Relian! You're alive!"
"Yeah. I was lucky. I need an evac at complex 18C."
"18C? How did you get there? That complex has already fallen."
"Yeah I know. The monster brought me here. That's what bothers me."
"Alright. We will be there in 2 minutes. Stay hidden."
"Roger. and, Elisa? Bring me a gun."
"10-4. Out." Elisa and a few other soldiers arrived without delay. "Relian? Is that a death knight's sword?"
"And armor. Yep."
"Didn't they take your gun? How did you get that?"
"Luck." The team departed for their base.
"Alright, listen up everyone. I have a hunch that a new player has entered the game. Quake has a new commander."
"What makes you say that?" A soldier inquired.
"That shambler attacked and defeated me, and I'm standing here now. That's what. I'm willing to bet that I was to be used as some sort of sacrifice. I'm also willing to bet that whoever or whatever was going to use me as said sacrifice has already discovered my escape and is probably planning an attack on our base as we speak. We had best be ready. Dismissed."
"Alright, you heard the man, move out! We'll strike first before they can launch their attack." The soldiers of Slipgate Complex 20A quickly armed themselves and dispatched to complex 18C."
"Alright, Elisa. All of our men have left for battle. If they fail, we are the last line of defense for our complex. If this complex falls, our war for earth will be one step closer to defeat."
"I'm not worried Relian. We're the best of the best, right? The two of us combined have...what, 1389 kills?"
"1390. Besides, who said I was worried? I have a feeling luck will be on our side in this fight."
