  • Capture Demo

    Hello ppl,
i'm trying to use the capturedemo to make some movies, someone knows how to use codecs?
Or maybe some softwares where I can edit the movie and compress with some codec?

    Tanks,

Movie Making: Making Quake Demos Into Movies 101 in Guide section.

We need that section labelled more prominently, in my opinion. Should have everything you need. (Codecs are pain, btw).

Tanks Baker, I'll look into it.

      Edit:
Hey, I did all the steps in that guide..
My quake crashed, it kept showing a message "Problem capturing frame", something like that, and the video is not opening in the wm.
Do you know what can it be?

Codecs are a pain, I recommend using Fraps to frame capture and go from there. I realize you are not familiar with Chuck or Z0r, but both made a ton of Quake movies as recently as a year ago.

We once had a 102 Guide, but I think it got "lost" back in 2005 when we were pre-live and scrapped a CMS (we've only been online since March 10, 2006).

See if this information helps ...

        3. Get a high quality quake exe such as Telejano. A good executable can be found at my files section Here .

        4. Get some quality Textures to make things look nice. Try Here or download FJQuake and use those textures.

        5. Set up your quake exe in windowed mode by making a shortcut of it and adding this to the target/command line -window -height 240 -width 320 -bpp 32. The reason for this is that you wont make a full screen movie so why take a full screen video capture of the demos, right?

        6. Start Fraps and set for 15 FPS and minimize.

        7. Start your quake exe and set the video options so that it looks good (experiment!!!). I turn off the messages by typing con_notifytime 0 in the console or add it to your autoexec.cfg. I also remove the weapon from sight (my preference), you can do that in Telejano in the options/misc menu or just type r_drawviewmodel 0 in the console.

        8. Start your demo in quake.

        9. Start Fraps recording with whatever key you have it set for in fraps. If you dont have the messages turned off with con_notifytime 0 then the errors about saved games will print everytime you record which looks ugly. Either turn printing off or change the default capture key in fraps. It HAS TO BE A KEY BETWEEN F1 AND F12!!!

        10. Record your stuff.

        11. [editing] You can either get a video editing program somewhere or download Virtualdubmod. Virtualdubmod is a free editing program that is easy to use.

        12. Cheating. I use Muvee auto-producer now. Just add your clips and music and select a style and it creates and edits the movie on the fly. Get it here. http://www.muvee.com/

        Good Luck!!!

I always wondered how you pumped em' out so fast.. My biggest problem with making a video is that I need more RAM! It got to the point when editing a project with many different clips in it that my computer locked up. It LITTERLY locked up right after every single clip I was adding or editing to the project. I was only able to work with one clip at a time, save the project, shut down the program, then start it back up and work on 1 more clip, then save, etc.. If I tried to add/work on one clip then move to the next, then my computer would crash and say "Low Virtual Memory"... I have 256 RAM and it is just not enough for manually editing a movie it was a big headache making that movie I made because of this. And with fraps, I dont know how others did it, but with like 1 min. of film equalled like 1GB..

        2. I capture at 15 FPS in Fraps. Capture DEMOS always and dont try to capture online stuff in reasl time especially if you are playing.

Hey... it worked... only one problem now: it's totally dark!
My quake, in windowed mod, is all dark... and gl_gamma won't make any difference.
I'll try to edit it in a that other program: Virtualdubmod.

          Tanks again Baker

Or just use DarkPlaces's built in video recording.

              Another newbie demo question...(sorry)

              Hello All,

Using Qrack 155, I know how to remove the other player names and part of the hud (simply by enlarging the screen), the crosshair (crosshair 0) and the weapon (r_drawviewmodel 0) but does anyone know how to remove the rest of the 'Hud' elements such the Timer. messages, etc so that I can just capture the raw action? Any useful info would be much appreciated

              Kind regards

                crosshair 0 // no crosshair
viewsize 120 // no hud = health, armor, ammo bar
                scr_printstats 0 // no stats
                con_notifylines 0 // no console text displays

                    Another newbie question...

Is it possible to slow the demo down so you get a smooth motion shot?

With JoeQuake and Qrack, experiment with pressing the up arrow/down arrow/left arrow and right arrow to control demo playback speed.

The docs are at joequake.quake1.net on what the keys do. Pressing Enter resets it to the default.

                        cl_demospeed and cl_demorewind in JQ
                        16:03:04 <gb> when I put in a sng, I think I might need nails
16:03:30 <gb> the fact that only playtesting tells me that probably means that my mind is a sieve

Found the docs on the keys:

                          RIGHTARROW plays the demo forward
UPARROW increases the playback speed (cl_demospeed)
                          DOWNARROW decreases the playback speed
ENTER sets default demospeed and plays it forward

Thanks Guys, you have to be damn fast on the trigger but It worked a treat. What would you recommend as a good capture codec. I'm trying Xvid but it's a bit grainy until, strangely enough, you get to the slow mo bits. Would fraps provide any 'crsiper' picture? Any suggestions welcome.
