    • The UQE Hexen2 v1.14 engine I've priced at $3.99
      Is that reasonable?

Nah, moving to sourceforge isnt useful to me, because I own the UQE domain which should be payed anyways as well as the server its running on. I have my own dedicated VM server.

So I'm trying to help curb the costs by making the binary commercial, and I hope you guys might help by supporting me in this. In the past up until now I've spent a lot of time money and effort to get it where its at now with 11138 downloads to date making it around 76GB of download bandwidth spent. In South Africa bandwidth is more expensive on average compared to other countries since our telekoms is pretty much still a monopoly.

Anycase, I've made the binary download free to download for this week, mostly for you guys and getting it tested properly. Download it, test it and let me know!

Also, what about we run a poll again on the engines... I'd like to see how the new UQE 1.14 fares now.

I was thinking, if I get the support I need I will build an exact port of that I've done for UQE Hexen2 to create UQE Quake1 that will have the same features as UQE Hexen2 v1.14

      ...
Anyone interested in seeing some new screenshots of my Quake2 project?
      http://forums.sagamedev.com/viewtopi...p=24609#p24609

This project is a from-the-ground-up development. I've developed a new renderer for Quake2 (idTech2) that has been developed using the C# language (Microsoft .NET) and using Microsoft XNA (Managed DirectX). It renders the Quake2 world a lot more accurate and cleanly, I've pretty much got the renderer down at 98% completion.
Its UQE's possible future... a complete new engine rather than a modified engine.

It renders Quake2 BSP perfectly, complete with visibility, md2 rendering as well as submodel (brushmodel) rendering.
It also renders any translucent surfaces including warped surfaces perfectly.

The renderer's source code is based upon the actual Quake2 renderer, not so much the exact code, but how its being done.

I've recently upgraded my code to XNA 4.0

It renders the Quake2 world much more accurately than the original old OpenGL renderer.
Infact, I've made a few fixes in the way the Quake2 world is being rendered, for example in the original Quake2 animated textures with a trans33/trans66 flag set doesn't animate as it should.
The renderer renders the Quake2 world via Shader Model 2.0 as well as Shader Model 3.0 and I'm planning to build a Shader Model 4.0 path soon.
It renders the complete world using vertex and index buffers.

Currently theres only two aspects still missing and those are sprite rendering as well as lightmap styles.
I haven’t implemented dynamic lightmaps, because the renderer is capable of rendering realtime lighting and "eat" lightmaps to give the same effect that dynamic lightmaps does.

The renderer was build from scratch.

        • Thanks!
I hope the engine feels overall improved

The bloom is completely re-written, just like I said it would, because the current bloom found in most engine mods are dated and ugly. This new method actually uses FBO and real GPU power. In my tests I get the impression that its actually faster than the older bloom code and renders much "cleaner" since its GPU based and doesn't do anything on the CPU which regards graphics.

This obviously opens the floodgates to even more impressive post-process effects like motion blur.
The only thing missing is AA when using FBO... I haven't had time to work on that, maybe I'll do a hotfix for it at some point once you guys can tell me if this release is stable.

          • Uploading files to free file hostings is a common and suitable for everyone way to reduce the cost of the bandwidth.

Making the engine commercial is not the best choice, as for me. I'd pay the fee, of course, it's not high or else, but it' just not right, as for me.

            • Great news!
I got a better deal with my ISP thats hosting me.
I'm better able to afford keeping everything online and keeping UQE's downloads free.
They gave me an extra 5GB bandwidth monthly if I stay with them and I'm paying a bit less.

                • You can sell GPL software afaik. You do have to provide the source code though, and I'm pretty sure you have to provide the source free of charge. Which makes it kinda pointless to sell a binary.

Some Linux distros are also commercial, although they contain GPL software. If people want to buy it, fine. Have to provide the source though.

Baker will probably be able to answer this better than I can.

                  • This is good Korax.
What is new with Q2 engine? when release?
My idea maybe bad? But i think maybe you replace "- Messageboard" link "http://forums.quake-engine.com/" to new link "http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-talk/other-games/" ?
My look: Start forum from scratch is bad (empty) (delete forum), this forum contain maximum of hexen2 community, and other games meets your interest in quake1,2,3,and hexen2, and link to us is UPs community. And you already here, and its very very good place for you too, what you think?

                    • Its not pointless... not all Hexen2 fans are coders that knows how to compile it.
Well, the next thing on my todo list is porting all my code from Hexen2 to Quake1 to create UQE Quake1. Only then will I start looking at Quake2.

                      • maybe the best choice is to merge all Q1 Q2 ahd H2 code in a single project... like FTEQW. You can structure that in modules, to write code separately... and use an unique user-interface...

                            • About scallers again, i am talked about scallers that would work on non hires textures.
On textures that does not have replacements by inkub0 texturepack and for example lightmaps is also images (bitmap) so if we can apply scaler to lightmap we can take beautiful shadows and/or lights more soft, much less pixelated. You know what i am talking about =)
