  • Built a little app to help make developing maps for HexenII easier using Worldcraft3.3 and *cough* newer editors. It converts version 220 map files into the old format, which can then be compiled using any utils available. Currently texture lock for rotation/mirroring is rather broken due to differences in file format, but as long as one sticks to a best practice of doing rotations and flips manually, it should all be fine. (Move lock, and almost all other alignment options are functional)

Does anyone find a tool like this to be useful? I know there is a bsp compiler for Quake1 which can interpret v220 files, but I didn't find anything similar which works for HexenII. I'd be interested in getting some feedback on this.

Here's the information page/download, and a few screenshots of test levels converted using the tool:

    • Hello Amran,

      Thank you for your information.

      Regarding your screenshots:
I remember, several month ago, someone else also posted screenshots of fan-made maps in development in this thread.
Knowing, that there are so few fan-made maps available for Hexen2, I´d like to as you:
All those new map screens looks BREATHTAKING for me !
I am a huge fan of fantasy ambience and these maps are exactly what my little heart needs.

Do you have some fan-made maps/episodes in your desk drawer ?

It is hard to believe for me, that all these fan-made map screenshots I saw didnt make it to a final release.
Maybe I just cant find them on the internet....

      Best wishes,
      Seven

        Yes.

Can it also convert Valve 220 to normal Quake .map format? That'd be awesome. I reckon it's not too different from Hexen's format?

Awesome job man, there are almost no people coding tools anymore. This is a gem.

            • Good to see a positive response for this! If anyone wants to help spread the word and post the information regarding this tool on other active HexenII/Quake1 forums or sites as well, that would be great. Though admittedly I've always wanted an easier way to make levels for these old games myself, this tool is for the community, and I hope it greatens the chance that we might see more user made content in the future.

Those are actually two small maps I put together as proof of concept that the converter works, neither one is a complete level at the moment. I do wish to release some HexenII content one of these days though! I'm also hoping that this converter will convince a few others to devise levels for the game now as well.

I included the option to convert levels to Quake as well. (It's in the drop down) I haven't tested it as thoroughly as Hexen support, but I believe the only difference between the two .map formats is that Hexen contains an extra key at the end of every brush/texture defining line.

                Yes, Amran.
                That would be very nice.

I think I have read Spike saying a quite similar thing regarding map differences.
He is the one who knows it for sure (his engine supports them all).

                  • Just heads-up so everyone knows.
I've just started setting up the original Quake1 source code and I'm busy converting it to Visual Studio 2010.

I'm starting with the "UQE Quake" project within the coming month. The feature set will be similar to that of UQE Hexen II. All the updates and fixes I've done with UQE Hexen II v1.14 will be ported to the new "UQE Quake" project.

                    • I would love to make maps for Hexen 2, unfortunately two things are keeping me from it:

                      1. I'm pretty busy with RemakeQuake, so a full on Hexen 2 SP map is probably out of the question atm; a speedmap or chainmap (one mapper starts and sends his part to the next, who adds stuff and passes it on) would be possible though.

                      2. There is no Hexen 2 game pack for (GTK/Net)Radiant. I'm so used to Radiant, having to learn another editor would again require too much time I think. If someone made a H2 gamepack for Radiant I'd probably start experimenting with Hexen 2 mapping.

The style of the game suits me, it's similar to what I'm doing in RMQ.

                      • HeXen II with the old technology from ATI called TruForm may use it for video cards Ati Radeon 8xxx, Ati Radeon 9xxx, Ati Radeon X Series. When using the driver Ati Catalyst 5.8 and early. In the new drivers and graphics cards support TRUEFORM was canceled. Why? is still unclear.
Activate TruForm in Ati control panel.
Not all models support tesselation, there are "trash" models or "shifts" in texture. Originally hexen2 is not designed to use this technology.

                        • Sup guys, decided to upload my Hexen 2 DM map if anyone wants to try it.

I called it Place of Three deaths, because it has 3 different "arenas" to fight in, each above the other. Basically my friend and I had this idea to use Hexen 2's destructibility as much as we could - and this is what came of it.

nearly everything is destroyable in the first two areas - but beware - it breaks normal engine limits for breakables so you MUST use a custom engine - I recommend the latest UQE Hexen.

Also, it was designed for PoP - it will still work without it but it will be missing all the spiffy effects.

                          Hexen 2 DM Map - Bloodshot.rar | Game Front

Drop the maps and MIDI folder in your data1 or portals directory. PM me if you wanna have a match on it.

Also it should be noted that this map wasn't designed to be the pinnacle of level design complexity - it's mostly centered around gameplay, but I don't think it looks too bad. It does make for some pretty funny moments, but also frustration if your not careful

                            • Thanks .

Does UQE Hexen 2 support putting CD tracks in a track folder like DP or DirectQ for Quake do? If not, what Hexen 2 engine does?

Also, If we retextured the Hexen 2 enemies with high-res textures, and THEN applied that tesselation, wouldn't they look like brand new models altogether?

(If tessellation was in a Quake engine couldn't we hypothetically use it with the QRF monster textures )

                              • Here's an extract from UQE's readme file:

Using .OGG Vorbis and .MP3 music files (*)
Supported in the engine is the ability to do OGG and MP3 playback for music. The engine takes preference to OGG over MP3 if the
base filename is found to be the same.

Under the game base directories, be it “/data1/”, “/portals/” or your own custom gamedir, create a directory namely “/mod/”.

We are now ready to add some OGG/MP3 audio to the engine.

A good idea would be to convert your copy of Hexen II and Hexen II: Portals of Preavus CD Audio to OGG. Name the Hexen II CD
Audio OGG files from “track02.ogg” to “track17.ogg”. Name the Hexen II: Portals of Preavus CD Audio OGG files from
                                “mp_track02.ogg” to “mp_track12.ogg”.

Place these files in your respective “/mod/” directories. You could also package the files into PAK files. When you set the engine
“Music Type” to “MOD” on the “Options” menu and you start any official level, you will be able to enjoy the original audio
without having to have the respective official CD in your CD/DVD-ROM drives!

So, how do I use this in my custom levels?

Easy. Add a new key namely “mod” to your “worldspawn” entity, with say, a string value of “Marilyn”. Place your OGG/MP3 file
namely “marilyn.ogg” or “marilyn.mp3” in the “/mod/” directory and you're done!

                                [mp_][track][02][.ogg] = [mission pack indicator][track][track number][format]
                                or
                                [marilyn][.ogg] = [mod name][format]
