I like your idea. I will say that I agree with the spirit of the others here that it needs refinement, but even refined ideas have room for refinement, so this is a good thing. Maybe I'll come back tomorrow and try to punch holes in your idea so you can make a slightly matured version. For now though, I need sleep.

Because I'm definitely not a noob at Quake - I know how to play, how to move, how to run items and control parts of the map, and I do get frags when we play on private servers.

I am, however, someone who can only invest a small amount of time into playing something like Quake online. That makes me a "casual player" by definition, but NOT a noob.
I have to be honest... I don't play Quake Multiplayer anymore, mainly because, too many players hate campers. I don't view camping as cheating; I see it as a tactic. (I've mentioned this earlier in another thread). But unfortunately, too many players bash campers. Would this casual league allow camping?

To the person who made this thread: I'm afraid that three leagues are not good enough. Quake players are very complex (they are quite diverse). I know this from my own experience and I have read Quake-related messages on Facebook.

    My suggestion:

    1. Noob League
    2. Standard League
    3. Elite League
    4. Casual League
    5. Super-Elite League (Or Nightmare League)

    ^

Nice try, but I have to correct you.

Your newbie league would probably bore the shit out of me, and anyone who has played FPS before.
    What he said. :v

But, I'm not against the idea at all, I'd happily try it to help see how it would work out.

I would argue that statement, but then again I'm just one person.I have helped countless players to varying degree's.

But the biggest problem is that the gameplay itself is not rewarding to someone like me. It is too simplistic. It was cool in 1996, but it can't hold a candle to newer games, as illustrated by the fact that almost no one wants to play it anymore.

The problem is not that you need to provide a newbie server. The problem is in the gameplay itself. I've been saying this for years, but no one ever believes it. Yet it is true.

To draw new players, Quake must absorb new gameplay elements from more successful games. Quake must change.

It's as with the dinosaurs; change or go extinct.
At first,I was determined that any form of 'Jazzing up Quake1' would require a full-compliment of server owners / players being on board, but now that I have had plenty of time to think about it, you are right.

The real problem is,how the hell do you tie newer game features into such an old game and make it worth getting someones attention? I personally don't see it being feasible, then again when I think about Quake1, I seriously lack imagination. I could look at newer games and postulate the quetion "How the hell do you apply this to Quake1?"

Darkplaces has the coolest updated SERVER feature I've seen in ages, support for 255 players. The only catch, everyone needs to use Darkplaces engine , or , what would be actually better, is if Darkplaces special netcode could be injected into all the popular multiplayer clients like ProQuake,Qrack,DirectQ ,and others. Connecting to a server would auto detect what netcode is being utilized by the server and what not.

What good that would do? Hell if I know. but it beats the shit out of 1996's 16 player limit

or designate servers as "noob", "leet", "mixed"

Do noobs not want to play with the big boys because failure is not an option??

How will u learn if u dont see tactics used by more advanced players?

Should noobs just read a text-based manual and take a test before they can play online?

download frikbots and play against them, once u are comfortable with the map, etc then play online.

Ive heard a lot of people say "i dont play online because im not good enough"..

its not like you are on live television, there are at most only 15 other people on a server, all using pseudo names. Pocket the ego and just play!

I will play with noobs in a friendly manner to teach what i know, then 20 minutes later ull be leet too!

  • quake leagues: a potental fix to the unbalanced world of q1 multiplayer

as suggested by the title, this is a little idea that's been floating around in my head for a while, but only recently has it formed into something i would like to share with the rest of the q1 community. Today, q1 multiplayer is not fun.

now while many say its the admin/player abuse, i think we can all agree its the lack of any decent player-base. the term multiplayer suggests many players, and the same 5 people playing everyday does not do the word justice.

before i continue, i just want to point out that this is just me blabbing an idea. it does not have to be taken seriously or even acknowledged, but it would be nice if it would be taken as such. now moving on...

    *****
the idea i have is to create 3 "leagues", the idea behind this is to separate the q1 players based on skill, and as players increase in skill, they move on to the next league.
    the 3 leagues are:

1: noob/beginner league- the idea here is to take new players and show them the basics of whatever mode is being presented (CAx, DM, CTF, etc). veterans and elite players would be here in a teaching role, to show newbs how to

move, shoot, rj, hook, etc. this is very important, becasue you cant breed good players by just raping them when they play mp for the first time. teaching them the basics now may be tedious, but will create a decent challenge for those

    who crave it later on.

2: standard league- after players become proficient in the basics of q1 mp, they move on to here, where they can test there newly acquired skills, as well as develop new ones. again, vets would be here as observers, not to fight, but to

    maybe offer tips.

3: elite league- when a player has become exceedingly proficient at mp, they move on here, where they face there former mentors to see how well they have come along. this is the reward for vets who would put there time into training:

instead of raping a newb, and then giving him vague advice, they are are facing an opponent whop has trained and practiced to the point that they make a good challenge.

    *****

each league could be divided into sub-leagues based on game mode, and each sub-league could have a server, or sub-leagues could share a server.

obviously we would need a large player base to make this worthwhile, but this system could train those who do come here until, just maybe, we do have a decent base o' players.

    comments,questions, criticism expected/welcomed as usual.
