Daaaamn. What engine is this? Is this even a Q1 engine? That looks an FPS disaster just waiting to happen on my PC. Lol.

Just waiting to build my house so i can get my gaminh office setup and i am going to build one bad ass gaming rig guaranteed. Already had my property cleared and leveled now waiting on permits and the building plan to be submitted by the builder. Custom home building is a pain in the ass.. i just cant wait to get off this gaming laptop 15inch monitor crap.

I seem to recall these same screenshots being posted before, but regardless you are right in that this is the sort of quality many players are looking for in a game these days. The cables above and lighting, or rather the shadows* being cast, are excellent.
That said, I would imagine that engines such as FTE, Darkplaces and possibly Qrack could produce something not a million miles away from that sort of image if the right textures were available. As mentioned before, FPS could be an issue on some machines (including mine) though and having to choose between speed vs pretty textures could deter many hardcore quakers.

                  * On the subject of clever use of shadows, I noticed this devilish message cast in to a secret area on Stalker's excellent go2hell map..

                  Nice work (as always) Stalky..

                  Kind regards

are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

                      It is Cryengine.

Most of the effect comes from the fact that the textures are actually not misaligned in this version, and that there is pretty lighting. It's not so much the engine, it's more the tidy construction, nice textures and lighting that make the difference. People generally overestimate the importance of the engine in making good looking environments.

                      Here's FTE for comparison:

Admittedly, FTE can't top the Cryengine - yet. The shadowmaps aren't quite perfect, and there is no HDR. The top shot also shows a bug with normalmap orientation that existed at the time. But these things can be fixed - it is possible to extend FTE with GLSL to make it do almost anything.

What I'm getting at is that it's possible to get these kinds of graphics out of a Quake engine these days. At the cost of some effort, but possible it is. And on top of that, you get Quakeworld's proven netcode and crossplatform capability and all the goodies that come with open source.

The main problem with the Quake maps, from a graphics perspective, is that they suffer from a lot of texture misalignment, and arguably some less than ideal use of the textures. We tried to fix this in RMQ, but we didn't exactly get a lot of support from the community for it.

                      Anyway, it's totally possible.

Good heavens!! That's incredible stuff GB. Once again the lighting, feel and realism of the shot is just so impressive IMHO. Bear in mind I don't really play anything other than Quake (ProQuake for the most part) these days due to time constraints so this is a new world to me.
Given that FTE is supposed to be able to connect to Netquake servers, maybe I should invest a little more time in looking in to it if it can produce these kind of results.
Thanks as always for the info and presenting it such a way newbs like me can understand it

                        Kind regards

                          Wow

That all looks great! And after I posted those pictures Talisa I stumbled on Blood Shots forum about it. The site I seen him developing it on he was going by Cleric so that threw me off. All I can say was damn good job as far as making the entire level all over again. I would be going in circles trying to get it looking that good and keeping the detail in mind while trying to remake a level like that.

I'll let you in on a little secret, building a modernesque 'Quake' for the masses will not include the current community being happy or satisfied.

                              Right.

Even if a person remakes the entire game on another engine like the screenshots from Blood Shot the game will still feel like well... Crysis with Quakes level.
