what made duke was the voice acting and all the shit he was saying all the time. i played it in front of my kid and his jaw dropped when i killed that alien son of a bitch.

    off topic
he gathered up a few super heros and there guns last night and was "playing quake"

Duke3d was inspiring design wise and had such an amazing ability to give narrative to something without any narrative. The jokes were on point and hilarious and the art perfectly matched what Duke Nukem was all about. For those that remember Duke Nukem was originally a 2d side scrolling paltformer. This was a terrific adaptation of that world in 3d.

Quake was a whole other ball of wax. Firstly, technologically, Quake was inspiring for it's day. Light and shadow effects never before seen, full 3d model characters, etc. The genius was the high modifiability of Quake via Quake C developed for the engine. C is an exceptionally easy language to code (if not limited) and this was a stripped down version that made modifying code a snap. Literally you could change code, compile and with a few minutes changed something about the gameplay and see the results just like that! It just didn't quite frankly require a high level of understanding of C to get started. Basically almost anyone with a bit of time could change Quake to do what you please.

The real issue with Quake is it was never a fully realized project. In a way, it was mostly a tech demo. Even it's finished product. Sure it was amazingly fun and had some interesting game play mechanics not yet seen in a FPS engine (CARMACK YOU GENIUS!), but this was all just a showcase of what potential one had with this engine and the engines to come. When Team Fortress hit the scene, it became clear this was no ordinary game! You could make it into whatever you wanted.

In a way, it's kinda great that Carmack worked on the engine code and netcode at the same time instead of splitting the projects up (which would have been more efficient and productive), and that they ended up dropping the Thor game idea and Aztec style level design. And dropping the extra RPG elements that it was originally intended to have. Basically a hacked down version of what it was "suppose" to be. It ended up like a much more advanced DOOM. And in a way, that was perfect. It gave us gameplay we already loved and introduced an almost open platform to design what we wanted around it. In other words, it's bland gameplay and hogpog level design helped give vision to those mods, TC's, games (half-life), etc. that came after it.

Don't get me wrong. I actually like the gameplay in Quake. My point is, if it had been more fully realized like Duke3d or had developed where Coders had split up the projects more efficiently it is likely it wouldn't have been as easily modifiable and much harder to dream a sweat dream of what could be. And for those that knew how to make it so.

Duke Nukem 3d could never do that because it's what I call a fully realized game. Basically nothing left to the imagination that the game hadn't already given you. Anyway, just my two cents! Both games are excellent but Duke Nukem 3d gave you exactly what you expected and did it well. Nothing else to see. Quake gave you more of the same with an amazingly open technology engine and a vision into what could be if you but only imagine it to be so.

Pretty much every FPS on the market today owes homage to this game. Nothing could honor it more than it's continued use and re-imagining in 2014! 18 years after it's arrival it still inspires us!

Which one did you enjoy more as a child?:
I enjoyed both, but played Duke more. As a child Quake scared me, and I found it very mysterious. Duke was more colorful. I would play Duke when I wanted to just kick some ass, and I'd play Quake when I wanted to try to survive until my ass was kicked or I was too scared to move forward.

Which one holds more replay value for you?:
I would have to say Duke Nukem. The reason is because it is more available to the world than Quake. Duke has been ported to all sorts of platforms, and so has Quake, but Duke has the upper hand in the amount of ports IMO, so it has more replay value to me.

Which one made you the most excited to play?:
Duke because I could actually get somewhere in that game, whereas in Quake I was always too scared to do much.

Which one did you like modding and mapping for more?:
Neither. I have no idea how to do anything in terms of modding with Quake (I know how to view models and whatnot but nothing else) and Duke I know how to edit the CON files and make a shitty level in Mapster. Though it's not a choice here, I'd say I am much more into modding and mapping Wolfenstein 3d. I know that game inside and out.

          Which one is your favorite?:

As a child, it was Duke Nukem 3d, and even today it is still my favorite game of all time, but Quake is also one of my favorites, and I've overcome my fears of the game and can actually kick ass in it... Now when it comes to multiplayer, I can't do shit in Quake, but fuck with me in STADIUM.MAP in DN3D, and your ass is grass

            But i have the weedwhacker...

IMO, i enjoyed duke a little more. But i know without a doubt that quake is the superior game.
            We primarily speak english here...
Is english a second language for you? If you are having trouble getting your point across please confront me on the forum or send me a PM. German is a second language for me and i will be able to provide the most help to those from deutschland.

Duke Nukem 3D was great when it first came out. Real world locations! Humor! Mirrors! Lots of novelties. Some 2.5++ dimensional stuff with sprites that you could walk on (to make bridges and stuff). 3D map editing. In fact, I tried making a little structure out of solid sprites, but it didn't work so well.... Anyhow, the full version of Duke was just more of the same, so I quickly lost interest. Pixelated porn didn't cut it, either. Hehe.

Also, Duke3D didn't have built-in internet play (of course). I'm sure you could have played on Kali, but it's not the same.

Quake had "true 3D", 16 player multiplayer, always available servers, QuakeC, etc. It could always reinvent itself. And you could always find people to play with it. After Quake came out, I don't think I really touched Duke3D again, except when someone would really beg me to.

                  VS.

Overall, I had more fun with DNF, even though it was a bit dodgy but I still liked Q4.
IMO Bulletstorm was a better Duke Nukem & Prey made better use of the Doom3 engine.

Parts of Quake 4 are an OK brainless shooter.

Prey did some cool things, such as the switching around of gravity, but the story was so bad that it almost hurt. Angry young man has to save his girlfriend who was abducted by aliens.

                      Hmmm

going to be honest, I thought that gun was a sprite at first

and throughout the whole video I just saw a weird looking doom sprite

                              @adam
                              DNF vs Q4?
thats easy, Q4 wins that hands down for me!

quake4, while not as good as quake1 or even as good as quake2,
still was quite enjoyable imo. ive played it all the way through a bunch of times myself.

it misses the magic of Q1 and enemies seem even more generic then the one from Q2,
but im its still a good game which enjoy revisiting once a year or so.

                              .

DNF on the other hand was just crap imo
a half-finished game which shouldve just stayed unreleased.
gearbox shouldve looked more at if what they got was any good rather and finish the game,
rather just fixing all bugs and releasing it without checking if it was any good or not
                              .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
                              > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread
