  • Server Fund Raising

I see a fund raising thread on runequake.com.

Happy to support Slot, just need to verify it is Slot.

Agree with consensus that we pay by the frag. Therefore I will be owed money....

Honestly i wish he would just sell it or hand it over to someone else who can properly maintain the servers and website.

@wl - whats wrong with how he is doing it? He's built up a popular server and yearly-ish he asks for donations to maintain it. I would do it the exact same way even if I could pay off the server for 100 years, right out of my pocket.

Actually I would do it a hair different. I would make the server a very very cheap subscription service. Play all year for 5 bucks or maybe make it a "choose your donation" yearly subscription. Some people would donate a buck but other more fortunate people may donate more like 50 bucks. It would probably all work out.

If the donations received ever reached a substantial level, I would take the mandatory part out of the donation. The idea wouldn't be to make anything. All donations would be dumped into maintenance and continuity. If yhere is a surplus then it shouldn't continue to be mandatory.

@MG, slot hasnt cared for those servers for quite some time. He would rather let them go if no one dontated as he does not really play anymore. Quite a few players were complaining about the lag and server side issues in recent months and the issue took forever to get addressed. So why would I not want him to sell it or allow someone else to take it over who can maintain them? We have all these servers and select few players it wouldnt be to hard to get 10 more RQ servers up and going where these players wouldnt have to donate to play. Buy as i have seen in the past, if the address is not quake.shmack.net those certain players wont connect to it in fear of being kimp'D i suppose.

My only complaint is that for a couple of years now people (myself included) have been complaining about the severe server lag and packet loss. For two years nothing has been done about it. I know Slot has said he's going to upgrade the server... I just hope the issues were relating to the server and not the actual hosting because if the issues are on the host level, upgrading the server won't do jack.

I don't really play RQ but once in awhile i jump on if i get bored just to have a field day and I have never ran into any of the "lag" issues but several people have complained over the year's. There is a fix for every problem. I would run an RQ server but it would never get used. People would rather play at the same ole server day in and day out with the lag issue then to find a new spot. I give it to those player's for their loyalty to shmack over the year's.

Slot posted on his forum that he switched his servers to the new server host a week ago, actually. He's looking to see if anyone is/was having any problems.

You always seem to beat everyone and wind up top score, so how do you have a bad connection?

Anyhow, do a tracert or use pingplotter or whatever to trace the hops to the server hostname. You may find out one of the hops has HUGE packetloss happening at random spikes. I had this a couple years back and it was a bad hop on the DC area. Since the server has moved, I hear some people dont always have the great connection they use to - I dont think there is a win win scenario for everyone because your path to the server depends on a number of other providers along the way and if they have oversold the bandwidth there not alot can be done, unless always stay connected to the server even if not playing. Have seen some people do that and the bandwidth monitoring tools at those providers will eventually allocate your connection better BW over time. Drawback there is server will be always full....

Sole's score can't be indicative of whether or not he has PL. You couldn't be serious lol

SO....looking at the general server list (from this quakeone forum) I rarely see ANY other servers with people on them. Am I missing a secret server list where you guys are playing? ....or....God forbid....have you moved on to Quake II ????
