  • Quake 1 Monthly Tourney for Prizes

    Hi All,

I had an idea which I passed by Frenzy and he thought it might be worthwhile to pursue.

Everybody knows there are weekly tourneys which Frenzy works his ass off to provide for us. I'd like to see about upping the ante for a MONTHLY tournament.

Here's the deal: Each month, by a specified date, each person whom wants to play paypals 5.00 to whomever runs it. (Keep in mind that paypal charges a 3.2% fee, so you'd need to send 5.16).

Once everybody has signed up, assuming we get 15 people for the tourney, that's 75 bucks in the pot.

I'd like to suggest that the prize breakdown be done this way:

    1. 30.00
    2. 20.00
    3. 10.00
    4. 5.00 (Player plays in next tournament free)
    5. 5.00 (Player plays in next tournament free)
    6. 5.00 (Player plays in next tournament free)
    7. Honorable Mention (Give them basic admin rights on a server for the month or something - basic admin priveleges to the site - first dibs on the next Quakeone mod / game / software, etc.)

Why not the large 1st place prize? Well, many people out there don't think they can place 1st, so in order to entice more to play we give out additional place prizes that are still meaningful. I might not place first, but I betcha I could finish in the top there and keep my cash for the next tourney!

The rules can be worked out by Frenzy or whomever runs it.

I for one support this 100% and am also willing to paypal in TWICE the amount just to sweeten the pot up a bit and get the ball rolling interest wise. Of course, the first few tourneys will be slow until word gets out and people start winning, then it should be loads of fun with some hella great matches on Quake Radio!

    Whaddaya Think?

sounds like a grand idea. Honestly it kicks ass . you'd have to split the cash between the team of 2 fyi

      Hrmm - that's a good point CS.

I'd suggest we start this off as a 1v1 then move to 2v2 once it's successful and doing well - it would avoid a lot of hassle at the beginning with splitting prize money.

Or have every team do 10 bux per person to make it better. But, I can see where one person pays and the other forgets.....etc etc.

It's really up to Frenzy in the end.

When I was browsing software for running our weekly tournaments I came across a ton of Ladder scripts which got me thinking... maybe we should start a QuakeOne ladder for various mods. Players can signup for the ladder and compete in that as well, perhaps having prizes for whoever's on top by the end of the month or whatever....

As far as payout for the above idea details would have to be worked out on that. You'd have to make a payout table I think. Say only 8 people sign up. You can't pay 7 people, that's kinda stupid. So you should do if less than X people signup (I'd say 8 minimum), first place gets 50%, second gets 30% and third gets 20% of the pool. Then for more players, decrease the percentages and add on a few more places. Basically this is how poker tournaments are held. You can see a table of how it works here:

        http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/tour...ize-structure/

Basically the more people playing, the lower the percentages are and the more people who get paid in the end. You could figure out the %'s based on the number of players in each tourney because you don't want to be awarding prizes that are less than what you paid to enter.

          Awsome idea fragmagnet!

You could count me in for this.

Start a roster or poll for everyone in favor for the idea?

How about a frogbot contest, where people try to get the most in 5/10 mins against frog .12c?
Yet I still beat you more easily than a hammer can beat a fresh batch of Rowntree's fruit jelly.

Chuck, when he was running tltq.com, had a contest where you had to get the most frags against 5 server bots on dm2 or dm4 (can't remember which it was). That was fun. I think I won

                  Just my opinion:

What would be interesting would be some sort of weighed system involving teams that was structured in an inclusive way to accomodate even the biggest doormats in Quake.

For example: Some sort of 4 players-per-team system that required 1 player be an invincible type, 1 player be a very tough player, 1 player be an average player and 1 player be a newbie.

Without doing something like this, the number of participants would be very, very limited -- at least after most participants realize how incredibly hopelessly outmatched they are (and therefore wouldn't be interested in it a 2nd time around).
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

For the weekly tournaments there's sometimes barely 12 players, how are you going to run a tourney with 4 player teams?

                      i have an idea...

we could revamp the whole tournament ideas to fit the following here:

of course, this all depends on exactly how many people show up, but for example's sake, we'll go with Sole's 12.

we take those 12 people, and divide them into three teams of 4. two of those teams duke it out first, and the third team takes on the winner. the winner of that match goes on to the quarter-finals, while the two losing teams duke it out in a 2nd chance match. the winner also goes on to the quarter-finals to fight the other winning team. now then, this is where it gets fun. the winning team of the quarter-finals gets split into two teams of 2, who will then fight in the semi-final match. finally, the winning team gets split apart, resulting in a 1 on 1 finals match. the winner of that match gets first prize.

                      just a thought

                        I said before.

                        Case closed

The current format does not allow meaningful participation for anyone but the most skilled players (top 5%-10%), so there aren't many players that play and a lot less than initially when many more wanted in.

I get your point but I don't believe it. Who are these outmatched players who want to play but don't because of the skilled players? Just about any regular on IRC plays in the tournament and no one other than them ever show up. I would believe your post if I saw a bunch of outmatched players show up on IRC but leave or decide not to play after seeing who is in the tournament. But that never happens.

And the point isn't about winning, it's having fun. In a two of the tourneys I played in, my teammate and I got smoked once and was able to play two more games because of the losers bracket. And after conversing with several of the people who lost out, we formed up a group and started a CTF game afterward. Fun times.

Ok, guys - thanks for the inputs!

However the polls and feedback show that people just aren't interested. Tis okay, maybe we can put together a one-time yearly tourney and people would join that instead.
